Salary Range: $41,600–$54,080 annually

Job Summary: Performs technical and manual tasks in monitoring, repairing, and maintaining a water plant and distribution system, and performs related work as required.

Supervision Received: Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Utilities Supervisor

Supervision Exercised: None

Essential Job Functions:
  • Performs daily equipment inspections and water quality testing.
  • Conducts preventive maintenance on pumps, motors, and related equipment.
  • Cleans and maintains mechanical equipment to ensure proper operation and longevity.
  • Operates and maintains excavation equipment, including backhoes and mini excavators.
  • Performs excavation for water and sewer line installations, repairs, replacements, culvert work, and drainage maintenance.
  • Monitors pumps, meters, gauges, and related equipment to ensure proper operation.
  • Collects water samples for required bacteriological testing.
  • Records operational data and equipment readings.
  • Participates in the department's on-call rotation.
  • Cleans and maintains water treatment facilities.
  • Performs technical and manual duties related to water system operations and maintenance.
  • Assists other divisions and departments assigned.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Required:

    Knowledge:
    • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of water treatment plants, wells, booster stations, and associated equipment.
    • Knowledge of specialized instrumentation and control systems used in public water systems.
    • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of chemical feed systems and power generating equipment.
    • Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations governing public water systems.
    • Basic knowledge of laboratory analysis methods and procedures.
    Skills:
    • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
    • Skill in interpreting operational data, readings, and reports.
    • Skill in performing mathematical calculations related to public water system operations.
    • Skill in reading small print and accurately documenting information.
    Abilities:
    • Ability to read and interpret basic engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical manuals.
    • Ability to identify abnormal readings or trends from gauges, meters, dials, and other monitoring equipment.
    • Ability to respond appropriately to emergency situations by following established procedures.
    • Ability to identify and correct potential safety hazards.
    • Ability to perform basic mechanical repairs and safely operate hand tools and excavation equipment.
    • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public.
    • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor, including pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying, and moving heavy objects.
    • Ability to lift and carry up to 100 pounds.
    Qualifying

    Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • A minimum of two years of experience in the operation and maintenance of Public Water Systems
  • Texas Class C Driver’s License with the ability to acquire a Class B Texas Commercial Driver’s License
  • Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Class C Ground Water License
