Job Summary
This position reports to the Refueling Services Supervisor and provides fuel moves in the spent fuel pool. In addition, the Level 2 Technician supports skilled activities during Head Area Maintenance in support of Reactor Vessel Disassembly and Reassembly. Level 2 Technicians also support skilled work in vessel maintenance such as BWR Jet Pump Plugs and Insert Swaps. This is an entry level position, and the candidate will be expected to qualify as a Refueling Services Level 3 Technician within a specified timeline.
The position can be based at any one of our four nuclear sites.
Key Accountabilities- Perform the duties of a Vistra Level 2 Refueling Services Technician to include:
- Vistra Spent Fuel Handler – move fuel in vessel at a PWR and BWR Spent Fuel Pools. Experience with vendor type spent fuel handling tools is required to achieve the qualification as well as the lower level qualifications.
- Vistra Level 2 In Vessel Technician – typical repetitive underwater work such as jet pump plug installation, underwater vacuuming, and thimble plugs.
- Vistra Level 2 Head Area Maintenance Technician – maintenance tasks such as seal table maintenance, PWR fuel transfer flange, Perry head spray piping removal and installation, and bolted joints.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to Level 1 Technicians.
- Work in a safe and error‑free manner.
- Participate in post‐outage critiques to provide feedback on improvement opportunities as well as positive lessons learned.
- Achieve Vistra established spent fuel movement rates to meet outage milestones in a safe and error‑free manner.
- Participate in work control coordination, scheduling, and engineering meetings involving online and refuel outage activities, to ensure that assigned work is properly assigned, planned and ready to work.
- Actively participate in all Vistra processes, such as the training program, surveillance program, and CAP to ensure effective work practices.
- Work with the Site Refueling Services Management Team to identify and support improvement opportunities.
- Support maintenance on the fuel handling equipment to include PM schedules, corrective maintenance tracking, and upgrade implementation.
- Perform maintenance on the rector services tooling to include PM schedules, corrective maintenance tracking, upgrades, and replacements.
- Identify equipment issues to the Refueling Services Supervisor to track equipment issues and ensure reliable performance of head area maintenance and underwater tooling and equipment.
- Provide input to assist with the preparation of plans and specifications as needed.
- Work as part of the fleet team to evaluate Reactor Services activities and recommend equipment, new concepts and techniques to improve performance, reduce costs, correct design, or improve worker safety.
- Provide input to assist with planning for work orders for site Refueling Services as requested.
- Support Dry Cask Fuel moves and New Fuel Receipt.
- Assist with the review of the Refueling Services outage schedule.
- Be willing and available to travel as assigned to other Vistra Nuclear Plants in support of maintenance and/or operational activities, including outages, dry cask storage, and outage preparation activities.
- All other job assignments and/or duties pursuant to company policy as approved by the Site Refueling Services Manager.
- Capable of qualifying as a Spent Fuel Operator at Comanche Peak, Davis Besse, and Beaver Valley AND
- Capable of qualifying as a Spent Fuel Handler at Perry AND
- Capable of qualifying as a Head Area Maintenance Technician on all Vistra reactor types AND
- Qualified as a Vistra Level 1 Refueling Services Technician OR
- Minimum 4 years of Refueling Services experience and one outage moving spent fuel at least two of the reactor types, OR
- Nuclear utility worker with technical / mechanical job skills and 5 years of experience, OR
- Completed trade school in boiler maker, iron worker, pipe fitter or similar craft, with 4 years of work experience OR
- Military veteran with technical / mechanical job skills and 4 years of work experience
- Capable of passing a respirator physical
