Position Summary
The Water Distribution Operator performs skilled fieldwork in the operation, maintenance, and repair of municipal water distribution and sewer collection systems. This position supports daily utility operations, responds to service calls, assists with line repairs, operates equipment, and helps ensure safe, reliable water and sewer service for the community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Perform maintenance and repairs on municipal water distribution lines and sewer service lines.
- Locate, expose, repair, and replace water and sewer mains, service lines, valves, hydrants, meters, and related infrastructure.
- Operate backhoe and other heavy machinery and equipment safely and effectively during utility repairs, excavations, and restoration work.
- Respond to water leaks, sewer backups, service interruptions, and emergency repair calls as assigned.
- Assist with line locates, flushing, meter work, valve maintenance, and routine system inspections.
- Follow safety procedures for trenching, excavation, traffic control, confined spaces, and utility work zones.
- Maintain accurate work records, service reports, and equipment inspection logs.
- Provide courteous service when interacting with residents, contractors, and other municipal departments.
- Minimum TCEQ Class D Groundwater license required.
- Experience operating a backhoe required.
- Experience in performing municipal water and sewer line repairs required.
- Valid Texas driver’s license required; commercial driver’s license preferred or ability to obtain if required by the employer.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physically demanding labor.
- Ability to participate in after-hours, weekend, holiday, and emergency on-call response as needed.
- Knowledge of public water distribution and sewer collection system operations.
- Ability to identify utility system problems and assist with safe, timely repairs.
- Ability to read work orders, maps, utility markings, and basic construction plans.
- Skill in using hand tools, power tools, pumps, tapping equipment, and other utility repair equipment.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and customer service skills.
Physical Requirements
This position requires work in outdoor field environments, including exposure to heat, cold, rain, traffic, excavations, mud, wastewater, noise, and heavy equipment. The employee must be able to lift and carry materials, climb in and out of trenches and equipment, stand and walk for extended periods, and perform manual labor safely.
