Job Summary: Performs complex work as a representative and advocate of inmates in a correctional facility. Works under general supervision with moderate latitude to use initiative and independent judgment. Provides technical support to inmates in the disciplinary process and guidance to others.
Essential Functions- Perform technical work for the inmate disciplinary process, including coordination with other staff, case management, application of policies and procedures, docket scheduling, and quality control; prepare and maintain accurate records of program activities; produce related reports.
- Notify and interview inmates charged with violations of agency, facility, or unit rules and regulations; explain charges to inmates and agency and contract facility employees; investigate allegations; prepare written statements; obtain all documentary evidence.
- Analyze inmates’ positions, develop defense strategies, advise inmates of alternative plans of action, represent inmates at disciplinary hearings; negotiate mitigation of punishments; advise and assist inmates with disciplinary appellate procedures.
- Assist in maintaining security of inmates.
- Perform other marginal duties as assigned.
- Education: Graduation from an accredited senior high school, equivalent, or GED.
- Experience: Experience in customer service, clerical, administrative support, technical program support, inmate discipline, or criminal justice is preferred.
- Knowledge: Knowledge of investigative methods and practices; knowledge of agency inmate disciplinary process; knowledge of agency and departmental policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Skills: Clear and concise communication; ability to coordinate with staff and agencies; interpretation and application of rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; problem-solving; computer literacy; technical reporting; work planning; research of disciplinary process questions.
- Physical:
Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, reach, grasp, pull, bend, climb stairs, identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, analyze, alphabetize, lift up to 15 lbs.; operate a motor vehicle and motor equipment. - Work Conditions:
May work inside/outside, around moving machines, radiant and electrical energy, close with others or alone, protracted or irregular hours, in heat, cold, humidity, dampness, dry, noisy environments, dust, fumes, smoke, gases, slippery surfaces, traveling by car, van, bus, airplane. - Equipment:
Computer and related equipment, calculator, copier, fax, digital recorder, tape recorder, telephone, dolly, automobile.
