Job Overview

When you join the Probation Service you will work to help keep the public safe by supporting people on probation before and after their sentence.

As a Probation Services Officer you will assess risks, implement sentences, manage offender risk, produce accurate reports, and liaise with courts and other agencies to ensure successful rehabilitation.

• Assess offenders, manage risk and support them through the criminal justice system.
• Implement sentencing decisions and monitor offender progress.
• Produce clear and timely reports for courts and agencies.
• Provide practical advice on housing, employment and support services.
• Maintain accurate case files and ensure professional judgement under service procedures.

• No degree required; experience working with people with social or personal difficulties is preferred.
• Excellent written communication skills – produce accurate reports to tight deadlines.
• Strong verbal communication – demonstrate empathy and patience.
• Resilient and organised – able to manage a caseload under a complex legal framework.

• Empathetic, patient and resilient.
• Good team player, able to work collaboratively with courts and agencies.

• Starting salary £28,064 (pro‑rated for part‑time).
• Annual pay progression through Competency Based Framework.
• Annual leave – 25 days (30 days after five years).
• Training and development opportunities within the Ministry of Justice.
