Key Responsibilities
  • Receives cases from investigators after children are removed.
  • Determines each child’s needs and ensures appropriate referrals for testing, evaluations, and services.
  • Works with children, families, and communities to plan for permanency.
  • Identifies potential permanency resources and conducts home studies of kinship providers.
  • Conducts meetings with parents to assess risk and safety, and refers parents to services.
  • Engages with children, family friends, foster homes, and kinship caregivers in public and private settings.
  • Collaborates with the Placement Team for placements.
  • Participates in meetings, conferences, and court hearings; prepares reports and testifies.
  • Informs all parties of significant events and maintains detailed case records.
  • Works with the department's attorney on contested hearings.
  • Supports kinship and foster caregivers, including on‑call duties as needed.
  • Transitions children back to homes during reunification and supervises adoptive placements.
  • Manages time efficiently to complete key tasks.
  • Maintains effective relationships with CPS staff, law enforcement, judicial officials, and community resources.
  • Performs additional duties as required to maintain unit operations.
  • Promotes cultural diversity and respects all coworkers, clients, and contacts.
  • Attends work regularly per agency leave policy.

  • Ability to travel and attend appointments after 5 pm.
  • Availability for rotating on‑call duty and irregular hours.

Education and Experience Requirements

Initial Screenings vary by level:

  • Worker I:
    Accredited Bachelor's degree OR Associate’s degree + 2 years relevant experience OR 60 college credits + 2 years experience OR 90 college credits + 1 year experience.
  • Worker II:
    Same options; plus previous certification or current employment as a CPS Specialist II/III with relevant certification.
  • Worker III:
    Same options; plus certification or current employment as CPS Specialist III.
  • Worker IV:
    Same options; plus 24 months experience as Specialist III and senior certification or current employment as Specialist IV.
Preferred Criteria
  • Degree in Social Work, Criminal Justice, Psychology, Human Development and Family Studies, Education, or Public Health.
  • Professional or volunteer experience with child protection, foster care, juvenile justice, mental health, or substance abuse services.
  • Familiarity with trauma‑informed care or experience conducting interviews and assessments with children and families.
Other Requirements
  • Valid Texas driver’s license and reliable vehicle; proof of driving record, insurance, and license required.
  • Same- or related-occupation vehicle: daily driving for visits and attendances after hours.
