Overview
Maintenance Section Assistant I – Office of Maintenance Operations – Terlingua, Texas (Job #2600259). TxDOT seeks a dedicated Roadway Maintenance Section Assistant to oversee critical infrastructure operations in the remote, desert terrain of West Texas. The role involves leading a skilled team through emergency repairs, long‑term maintenance planning, and ensuring safe, reliable travel for the communities of West Texas.
Free housing is available; candidates must live in Terlingua to qualify.
SalaryMaintenance Section Assistant I – B19 – $48,244.00 – $76,028.00 per year.
Location and Work HoursTerlingua Maint Sub‑Section 170 WEST, Terlingua 79845. 25 % travel. Day shift Monday – Thursday 7:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. 40 hrs. per week. On‑site, no flex.

- Assist a Maintenance Section Supervisor in overseeing the work of crews and contractors within designated geographical area.
- Lead Transportation Maintenance Crew Chiefs, technical and clerical staff.
- Respond to emergency notifications on as‑needed basis.
- Assist in budget preparation for the section.
- Schedule equipment, materials and personnel for section projects.
- Plan, coordinate and implement emergency response to inclement weather, accidents and hazardous spills.
- Complete reports on damaged railings and bridges.
- Ensure all projects follow established safety guidelines.
- Inspect road conditions, work‑in‑progress and completed work.
- Maintain records on materials, supplies and personnel.
- Operate light and heavy roadway equipment.
- Perform operations of section in absence of supervisor.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
High School Graduate or equivalent; 5 years roadway maintenance or construction related work (full‑time or prorated part‑time). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis. Valid U.S. driver’s license. Class "A" Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) at time of application.
Preferred Qualifications- Commercial driver’s license with Hazmat endorsement.
- Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes.
- Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour.
- Medium work: lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
- Walking‑moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance from one work site to another.
- Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.
- Must be able to report for duty within 30 minutes of notification on a 24‑hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
