As a TxDOT Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief, you will lead a crew in roadway tasks, train on safe operation of equipment, perform roadway repairs, and respond to weather events and emergencies. This role involves hands-on work in West Texas, with opportunities for growth and a rewarding career serving the community.

• Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities.
• Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section.
• Responds to emergency notifications on an as-needed basis; coordinates with private entities as needed.
• Assists during accidents and adverse weather to sand bridges and roads, set up warning signs, and organize crew response.
• Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
• Inspects roads en route to and from job sites and reports problems to supervisors.
• Inspects work performed by maintenance contractors.
• Maintains records on materials, equipment used, and employee time sheets.
• Monitors materials testing and inventory of roadway maintenance materials.
• Oversees contract workers and coordinates applicable activities.
• Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians.
• Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on equipment use.
• Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments, providing operational updates to the supervisor, contributing to career conversations, and approving leave requests to ensure coverage.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.

5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

• Valid U.S. driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
• Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
• Must be able to obtain a "N" Endorsement or ( Tanker Endorsement) for CDL license within 60 days from the date of employment.

• Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
• Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour.
• Subject to noise and vibration.
• Subject to hazards including moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals.
• Required to wear protective gear (respirator, hard hat, or other device).
• Medium work:
  Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
• Standing for prolonged periods; talking and hearing capabilities required for communication.
• Visual acuity to operate motor vehicles and heavy equipment and to inspect facilities/structures.
• This job has been identified as physically demanding and may require a pre-employment physical.
• Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions; this is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
