Location: McCamey
Transportation Maintenance Tech I/II/III (McCamey)
Position located at the McCamey Maintenance Office, 830 W 5th St, McCamey, TX 79752. This role supports roadway maintenance and repair, traffic control, equipment operation, and emergency response operations.
Responsibilities- Perform routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control, and assistance to the public during emergency situations.
- Identify, repair, and install signs, delineators, mailbox supports, and posts; perform basic welding as needed.
- Assist local law enforcement at accident sites and assist stranded motorists.
- Set up and remove traffic control devices, cones, warning signs, and barricades; inspect barricades for compliance.
- Maintain highways and rights‑of‑way, repairing guard rails, highway markers, and signs; haul materials and equipment to job sites.
- Maintain picnic and rest areas, maintenance yards, and comfort stations; remove litter and debris.
- Operate light equipment such as front‑end loaders, pneumatic rollers, spreader boxes, backhoes, street sweepers, and mowers.
- Perform preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing, and minor repairs on equipment; complete required reports (timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI).
- Conduct cleaning or sanding of bridges and roads; post warning signs during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
- Inspect maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
- For Transportation Maintenance Tech II: serve as the sole maintenance contract inspector on small projects; inspect traffic control devices; maintain construction project records; operate heavy equipment such as large draglines, shovels, paint stripers, and dump trucks; identify and resolve complex maintenance problems; work on a survey crew using survey instruments.
- For Transportation Maintenance Tech III: operate complex heavy equipment (motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self‑propelled asphalt distributor, profiling/milling machine); serve as a work crew project lead; train other employees.
Transportation Maintenance Tech I: $49,200 – $61,130 annually
Transportation Maintenance Tech II: $54,000 – $64,469 annually
Transportation Maintenance Tech III: $56,400 – $71,055 annually
- Education:
Not required for Tech I; education or training may substitute for experience on a year‑per‑year basis. - Experience:
- Tech I – No experience required.
- Tech II – 1 year of experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work.
- Tech III – 2 years of experience in related fields.
- Valid driver’s license required. Must obtain a Commercial Class “A” Driver’s License with an “N” endorsement within 120 calendar days from the date of employment.
- Work in extreme cold and heat; subject to noise, vibration, hazardous moving vehicles, high places, chemicals, environmental fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, and poor ventilation.
- Lift up to 50 lbs, frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
- Work hours may include outside of 8‑to‑5, weekends, holidays, and inclement weather.
- Must wear personal protective equipment and comply with all safety requirements.
- Must be able to report for duty within 30 minutes of notification on a 24‑hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
