Ferryboat Deckhand I, II, III-PA (2600543)

Position Information:
The Port Aransas Ferry Operation runs a fleet of 8 ferries (three 20-car ferries and five 28-car ferries). The operation crosses the Corpus Christi Ship Channel between Aransas Pass Harbor Island to Port Aransas, on Mustang Island. The quarter-mile route typically takes less than ten minutes; peak summer hours may require longer wait times. The operation is open 24-7, 365 days a year and is part of SH-361.

The Port Aransas Ferry Operation serves as an evacuation route for the City of Port Aransas during hurricane events.

Salary Range by level:

  • Ferryboat Deckhand IA13 — $35,439.00 to $52,388.00
  • Ferryboat Deckhand IIA
    15 — $38,976.00 to $58,045.00
  • Ferryboat Deckhand III A17 — $42,976.00 to $64,469.00

The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of the position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level, and all other appropriate factors and based on business needs.

Position Responsibilities

Performs as deckhand of motor ferry vessels transporting crew members, public vehicles and passengers. Work requires constant contact with private entities. At this level, employees follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Ferryboat Deckhand I

Responsibilities include:

  • Perform duties as ferryboat oiler.
  • Assist in daily inspection of operating condition of emergency firefighting, lifesaving, and safety equipment on the vessel.
  • Assist in repair or renovation of motor ferry vessels as directed.
  • Attend to passenger needs; perform cleanup and maintenance duties.
  • Ensure compliance with the Federal Waters Pollution Control Act and Federal Communications Act of 1934.
  • Participate in periodic drills and emergency exercises.
  • Perform deck evolutions, operate safety gates and vehicle loading ramps; direct, space, park and block vehicles; maintain deck security.
  • Pump bilges as needed; read gauges and fluid levels; report issues to the captain.
  • Report observations and actions affecting vessel stability, safety, and welfare to the captain or first deckhand.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Ferryboat Deckhand II — Additional duties:

  • Conduct daily inspection of emergency equipment; perform duties of first deckhand.
  • Stand lookout and assist captain in maneuvering in high-density traffic in accordance with Inland Navigation Rules and seamanship.
  • Perform duties as ferryboat oiler; assist in repair/renovation of vessels.
  • Serve as secondary enforcement authority for state ferry regulations.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Ferryboat Deckhand III — Additional duties:

  • May serve as lead worker and related tasks.
  • Serve as loading supervisor when working as first deckhand.
  • Perform duties as first deckhand and as required as ferryboat oiler.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications

Ferryboat Deckhand I:
No education or experience required.

Ferryboat Deckhand II
: 12 months in ferry deckhand-related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent)
