Job Description

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Waco District is looking for a skilled and dedicated Equipment Operator to join our team in the Hamilton Maintenance Section. In this role, you will be responsible for operating a variety of heavy machinery to support vital road maintenance and construction projects that ensure the safety and quality of our transportation infrastructure.

Minimum: 45,521.00

Maximum: 71,055.00

Responsibilities
  • Operate heavy equipment such as tractor‑trailer haul truck, motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self‑propelled asphalt profiling/milling machines, dump truck, front‑end loader one‑and‑quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment.
  • Operate tractor‑trailer haul trucks to relocate heavy and light equipment, loading, securing, and unloading equipment on haul trailers in compliance with federal, state, and Department motor vehicle laws.
  • Assist local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assist stranded motorists as required.
  • Assist with traffic control; place and gather cones, warning signs and barricades; flag traffic.
  • Monitor and complete required reports including time‑keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, PMI checklist, and records work in progress.
  • Coordinate equipment operations for daily work assignments.
  • Serve as a work crew project lead and ensure work performed meets project specifications.
  • Train other employees on equipment operation and safety procedures.
  • Sand or clean bridges and roads, post warning signs, help the public and perform other work during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents and hazardous material spills.
  • Other job responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
  • 1 year experience in maintenance and/or construction equipment operation (full time or prorated part time equivalent).
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License for equipment operation at the time of application and obtain an "N" endorsement code within 90 days from the date of hire.

Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes.
  • Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures.
  • Methods and procedures involving storage & transport of hazardous materials.
  • Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment.
  • Prioritizing and organizing work assignments.
  • Training in a classroom, office, or field environment.
  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade.
  • Operating light and heavy highway equipment.
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others.
  • Maintaining a safe working environment.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes.
  • Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection.
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour.
  • Subject to noise.
  • Required to wear protective gear: respirator, hard hat, or other device.
  • Medium work: lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Standing - prolonged periods of time.
  • Kneeling - bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s).
  • Walking - moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance from one work site to another.
  • Job is physically demanding and will require a pre‑employment physical.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment; this position is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
