BUS DRIVER
Job SummaryOperate school bus and related equipment to provide safe and orderly transportation of students and other authorized persons on assigned routes and to and from locations.
Major Responsibilities Vehicle Operation- Drive bus daily following assigned route and schedules.
- Drive bus to extracurricular activities.
- Anticipate problems such as traffic, weather, road conditions, and schedule changes and adjust to ensure safety and reduce delays.
- Perform pre- and post-trip inspections, maintain clean bus, keep appropriate fuel level.
- Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, mechanical problems and complete reports.
- Instruct students on safe entry/exit and passenger rules.
- Supervise students during boarding, disembarkation, and crossing street.
- Perform emergency evacuation when warranted.
- Maintain discipline, use effective behavior management and report problems to administrators, teachers, parents if warranted.
- Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations.
- Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment.
- Correct unsafe conditions, report hazardous conditions on route.
- Install snow chains during inclement weather.
- Maintain safety certification and follow district protocols and emergency procedures.
- Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with office and other drivers.
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date records of bus mileage, gas, oil consumption, passengers transported.
- Clear and valid Texas commercial driver’s license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Ability to pass DOT alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam.
- Ability to complete required bus driver safety training.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to use maps and GPS to follow routes and locate addresses.
- Ability to manage student behavior.
- Ability to communicate effectively with others.
- Ability to operate bus.
- Preferred, but not required: prior experience.
- Tools/Equipment: school bus, two‑way radio, GPS, safety equipment (flashes, reflective signs, fire extinguisher).
- Posture: prolonged sitting; frequent standing and twisting; occasional kneeling/squatting, bending, stooping, pushing/pulling.
- Motion: prolonged driving; moderate walking; frequent climbing stairs, grasping/squeezing, wrist/shoulder flexion, reaching.
- Lifting: limited light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds) daily.
- Environment: frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, noise, vehicle fumes; work around moving vehicles; irregular hours; occasionally prolonged hours.
- Mental Demands: maintain emotional control under stress.
$20 per hour or more depending on experience. Part‑time.
