Position: Maintenance Worker I - Street Dept
Location: Center

Overview

The position performs semi-skilled maintenance and repair tasks for the City, responsible for maintenance, construction and repair of City streets, sidewalks, rights‑of‑way, and other assignments to assist with overall department operations.

Responsibilities
  • Perform general road maintenance and related activities including flagging traffic, mowing, temporary and permanent asphalt surface repairs, patching holes, sawing pavement, concrete repair and pouring, clearing brush and trees, vegetation control, sweeping, routing and sealing road cracks, and removing dead animals and trash.
  • Cleans, lubricates, and performs preventive maintenance or repair on equipment.
  • Inspect and maintain assigned equipment; maintain equipment in clean and operating manner.
  • Place and remove cones and traffic barricades as warning devices to secure safety at work sites, direct traffic when necessary.
  • Install concrete form work for streets and sidewalks.
  • Trim and cut trees and shrubbery, remove tree trunks, operate high‑lift, and shred plant debris.
  • Perform activities related to snow cleanup to include operating snowplow truck, spreading chemicals, and shoveling as assigned.
  • Perform activities related to installation and clean up after special events, disasters, accidents, and other events.
  • Sweep and shovel debris and litter, moving heavy objects and loading into trucks.
  • Perform pre and post work safety check of vehicle on a daily basis.
  • Ensure all activities are carried out in a safe manner; adhere to all safety regulations; ensure all regulations pertaining to the safe use of equipment are understood and followed.
  • Report all accidents to the appropriate authority. Follow all policies for reporting.
  • Complete work orders, daily activity reports, inspection reports, and timesheets; maintain maintenance and service records/logs, and other pertinent information.
  • Provide backup assistance to other department personnel as needed.
  • Report to work for on‑call after hours needs, as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma/equivalent.
  • Previous experience in public works construction or equipment operation preferred.
  • Valid driver license.
  • Ability to obtain the required Class B CDL with air brakes endorsement within three (3) months from date of hire.
  • Knowledge of traffic safety principles.
  • Knowledge of safe operations of heavy‑duty trucks and equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic mechanical and electrical equipment maintenance procedures.
  • Ability and skill to drive and operate mobile equipment in a safe and proper manner.
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of assigned equipment and machinery.
  • Knowledge of utility markings and clearances and rules for safe equipment operation in close proximity to underground and overhead utility facilities.
  • Knowledge of construction industry safety rules and ability to utilize all personal protective equipment necessary.
  • Knowledge of legal load limits for assigned equipment and vehicles.
  • Ability to operate assigned machinery and equipment skillfully and safely in close proximity to vehicular traffic, grade and alignment stakes, slopes, trucks, other construction equipment, laborers and utilities.
  • Ability to read and understand grade and alignment stakes set by others.
  • Ability to safely load, unload, and transport equipment to and from job sites.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of computer software including word processing, spreadsheet and database applications consistent for this position.
  • Skill in organizational and time management to prioritize duties to accomplish a high volume of work product while adapting to constant changes in priority.
  • Ability to understand and effectively carry out local policies and procedures; written instructions, general correspondence, and Federal, State, and local regulations.
  • Ability to perform detailed work accurately and independently in compliance with stringent time limits with minimal direction and supervision.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate and consistent records with the position.
