Position: Transportation Maint Tech I/II/III (Crane)
Location: Crane

Overview

TXDOT's Odessa District seeks a Transportation Maintenance Tech I, II, or III for the Crane Maintenance Office based in Crane, Texas. The role involves outdoor work and operating construction equipment to support roadway maintenance and repair.

Responsibilities

The essential duties vary by level:

  • Transportation Maintenance Tech I: assist in identifying, repairing and installing signs and related hardware; basic welding; use/move equipment, tools, and materials; provide support to local law enforcement at accident sites; assist with traffic control and flagging; inspect and maintain barricades; perform roadway maintenance, guard rail and sign work; upkeep maintenance yards and rest areas; perform preventive maintenance inspections and report generation;

    assist during emergencies; perform other duties as assigned.
  • Transportation Maintenance Tech II: perform skilled roadway repairs; erect/repair guard rails and signs; operate complex heavy equipment (e.g., motor grader, excavator, crane, paving equipment); operate various light and heavy equipment; conduct PMI and required reports; assist with accident response and emergency operations; perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Transportation Maintenance Tech III: lead work crews, inspect traffic control devices for compliance, train other employees, and provide advanced maintenance and project oversight; perform highly skilled roadway repairs and equipment operation; supervise safety and compliance tasks; continue to operate a range of heavy/light equipment and perform PMI and reporting.
Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

TMT I = No experience required; TMT II = 1 year experience; TMT III = 2 years experience. Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work. Substitutions for experience may be allowed with related technical training or education on a year-for-year basis.

Licenses and

Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license; state vehicle operation required.
  • Commercial Class A Driver's License with an N endorsement or CDL A within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
  • Must obtain an N endorsement within 30 days or per hiring requirements.

Commercial Driver’s License is required.

Competencies and Skills

Transportation Maintenance Tech I: knowledge of highway/bridge construction materials; basic math; use of hand and power tools; operating light/heavy highway equipment; maintaining safety and positive working relationships; ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

Tech II: substantial knowledge of intermodal construction/maintenance methods, Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices; operation of a range of equipment; ability to prioritize work; follow instructions.

Tech III: extensive knowledge of construction/maintenance materials and the TMTD; proficient public relations; advanced ability to plan, organize, and operate a broad set of equipment; maintain safety standards and relationships; follow instructions.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Protective gear required (e.g., respirator, hard hat, steel-toed boots).
  • Subject to extreme temperatures, noise, vibration, hazards from traffic and equipment, and atmospheric conditions.
  • Medium work: lift up to 50 lbs; frequent lifting up to 25 lbs; balance, stoop, kneel, reach, hear, and see as required for the role.
  • Pre-employment physical; drug testing for safety impact positions; random drug testing in some roles.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 30 minutes on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergencies.
Job Details

Salary:
Minimum $49,200;
Maximum $71,055 annually. Pay Basis:
Yearly.

Work Location:

Crane County Maintenance Office, 996 US HWY 385N, Crane, TX 79731. Travel:
Yes, up to 10%. Shift: Day shift, 40 hours per week (Mon-Thu, 7:00 am – 5:30 pm). Location flexibility:
Onsite.
