Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operatorsReports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notifications as needed and contact with private entities. Employees perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
- Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs, and organizes response of crews.
- Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
- Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
- Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
- Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
- Monitors materials testing and inventory of roadway maintenance materials.
- Operates light and heavy equipment.
- Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
- Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serves as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presents operational updates to the supervisor; provides input on team members’ career conversations; and approves leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.
Experience: 5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work. Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent. Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
Licenses and Certifications- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class "A" CDL within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

Extensive knowledge of: Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work;
The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
Considerable knowledge of: Applicable surveying procedures, standards, and instruments; applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes; operating light and heavy highway equipment; training in a classroom, office, or field environment; maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others; communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Other Attributes: Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals; delegates routine and important tasks and decisions; shares authority but has ultimate accountability.
Physical Requirements and Working ConditionsSubject to inside and outside environmental conditions; extreme cold and heat (below 32°, above 100° for more than one hour); hazards – moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals.
Medium work: lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
