As a Transportation Tech for the Tilden Maintenance office, you will work on a crew with various types of equipment to maintain roadways and keep them clear and safe for the traveling public. Tilden Maintenance is responsible for numerous roadways within McMullen County that include IH 37, FM roads and other state highways within the county.
This position is eligible for a $1,000.00 Recruitment Bonus! An employee who receives a recruitment bonus must remain with the department for 12 calendar months after the date of receiving the recruitment bonus payment. Current Department employees who transfer either competitively or non-competitively are not eligible.
Annual Salary Ranges- Transportation Maintenance Tech I (A16): $40,918 - $61,130
- Transportation Maintenance Tech II (A17): $42,976 - $64,469
- Transportation Maintenance Tech III (A18): $45,521 - $71,055
This position is for a Transportation Maintenance Tech I, II or III, depending on business needs and applicant qualifications. TxDOT reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on business needs and the applicant's work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors.

Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
Transportation Maintenance Tech I- Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; uses and moves equipment, tools, materials and products related to these activities.
- Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites and assists stranded motorists as required.
- Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic; determines placement of traffic control devices and installs or moves devices.
- Operates heavy equipment such as front‑end loaders, tractor‑trailers, large draglines, shovels, paint stripers and dump trucks.
- Operates light equipment such as front‑end loaders, pneumatic rollers, rotary brooms, spreaders, backhoes, street sweepers and mowers.
- Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes required reports including time‑keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms and PMI.
- Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents and hazardous material spills.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
- Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications and safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
