Maintenance Section Assistant – Dimmitt, TX (2601744).

This role supports the Maintenance Section Supervisor and helps lead transportation maintenance crews and contractors in a designated geographic area. The position may require emergency response on an as-needed basis and operates with increasing independence, escalating unusual issues to the supervisor.
Responsibilities- Assist in budget preparation for the section.
- Assist the maintenance section supervisor in overseeing the work of the section and contracted crews, including scheduling equipment, material, and personnel for section projects.
- Assist with planning, coordinating, and implementing emergency response to inclement weather, accidents, and hazardous spills affecting area roadways.
- Complete reports on damaged railings and bridges.
- Inspect road conditions, work in progress, and work completed by crews and contractors.
- Lead the work of transportation maintenance crews and support staff as a lead worker; schedule daily work assignments and provide input on team members’ career conversations; approve leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
- Serve as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting; present operational updates to the supervisor.
- Ensure operational coverage in the absence of the supervisor.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
- Education: High School graduate or equivalent.
- Experience: 6 years of experience in roadway maintenance or construction-related work. Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent. Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
- Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license; ability to drive a state vehicle. Commercial Driver Certificate and Commercial Driver's License may be required.
- Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance.
- Reading and applying applicable plans, specifications, estimates, and compliance requirements.
- Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance.
- Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and relevant safety standards.
- Administrative support practices including writing, editing, and report writing; taking meeting notes and records management.
- Subject to extreme cold and heat; exposure to hazardous conditions and moving vehicles or machinery.
- Exposure to fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, and poor ventilation; may involve wearing protective gear.
- Work in confined spaces such as manholes; occasional lifting up to 50 lbs with varying weights for different tasks.
- Occasional long-distance travel between work sites.
This position is identified as physically demanding and may require a pre-employment physical.
Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety-impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and may be subject to random drug testing.
