Job Title: Substitute School Bus Driver

Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt

Reports to: Director of Transportation

Pay Grade: Substitute Auxiliary Staff

PRIMARY PURPOSE

Ensure safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned routes as needed. Operate a school bus that transports students and authorized personnel to and from schools or other designated locations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Certification:

  • Valid Texas commercial driver’s license (Class

    B) with appropriate endorsements
  • Ability to pass annual Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). examination

Special Knowledge/

Skills:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Ability to pass random alcohol and drug testing
  • Ability to complete required bus driver safety training and maintain certification
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Knowledge of student discipline procedures
  • Ability to manage student behavior
  • Ability to safely operate a school bus

Experience:

  • None required

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Vehicle Operation

  • Follow assigned routes and adhere to established schedules.
  • Drive bus for extracurricular activities as assigned.
  • Inspect bus before and after operation and report needed repairs.
  • Report accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures; complete required reports.
  • Maintain accurate records of mileage, fuel usage, and passenger counts.
  • Keep assigned bus clean and properly fueled.
  • Notify appropriate personnel of route condition changes or hazards.

Student Management

  • Supervise students while boarding, exiting, and crossing streets.
  • Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.
  • Maintain discipline and report behavior concerns according to district procedures.
  • Assist students with disabilities as required, including securing wheelchairs and operating adaptive equipment.

Safety

  • Observe all traffic laws and school bus safety regulations.
  • Maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Inspect emergency equipment to ensure proper condition.
  • Correct unsafe conditions and notify supervisor of issues that cannot be immediately resolved.
  • Report hazardous route conditions.

Other

  • Operate two-way radio to communicate with the transportation office.
  • Work irregular hours as required.
  • Complete required training to maintain certification.
  • Comply with state laws, district policies, and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

None.

MENTAL DEMANDS / PHYSICAL DEMANDS / ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

Tools/Equipment Used: School bus; two-way radio; safety equipment including flares, reflective signs, and fire extinguisher; wheelchair lift/ramps; adaptive equipment.

Posture: Prolonged sitting and driving; frequent reaching and repetitive hand and arm motions; occasional kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling.

Motion: Frequent walking and assisting students on and off the bus.

Lifting: Moderate lifting and carrying; may assist students or equipment.

Environment: Work inside and outside; exposure to extreme temperatures and vehicle fumes; work around moving vehicles and machinery; irregular hours as needed.

Mental Demands: Maintain mental alertness and emotional control in emergencies and when supervising students.
