PRIMARY PURPOSE

Ensure safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned routes. Operate a school bus that transports students and authorized personnel to and from schools or other designated locations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Certification:

• Ability to obtain a valid Texas commercial driver’s license (Class
  
  B) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements
• Maintain an acceptable driving record in accordance with DPS regulations
• Ability to pass annual Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). examination

Special Knowledge/

Skills:

• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Ability to pass random alcohol and drug testing
• Ability to complete required bus driver safety training and maintain certification
• Ability to use maps and Global Positioning Systems (GPS)
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
• Ability to communicate effectively
• Knowledge of student discipline procedures
• Ability to manage student behavior
• Ability to safely operate a school bus

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Vehicle Operation

• Follow assigned routes and adhere to established schedules.
• Drive bus for extracurricular activities as assigned.
• Anticipate traffic, weather, and road conditions and adjust accordingly to ensure safety and timeliness.
• Inspect bus before and after operation; check fuel, tires, lights, brakes, and steering.
• Report accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures; complete required reports.
• Maintain accurate records of mileage, fuel consumption, and passenger counts.
• Keep assigned bus clean and properly fueled.
• Notify appropriate personnel of route condition changes or hazards.

Student Management

• Instruct students on safe riding rules and supervise boarding, exiting, and street crossing.
• Maintain discipline and report behavior concerns according to district procedures.
• Communicate with administrators, teachers, and parents regarding student behavior when appropriate.
• Perform emergency evacuations when necessary.
• Maintain accurate student rosters.
• Assist students with disabilities as required, including securing wheelchairs and operating adaptive equipment.

Safety

• Observe all traffic laws and school bus safety regulations.
• Maintain safety certification and acceptable driving record.
• Ensure emergency equipment is present and in proper working condition.
• Report hazardous route conditions.
• Correct unsafe work conditions and notify supervisor of issues that cannot be immediately resolved.
• Administer first aid as needed in accordance with training.

Other

• Operate two-way radio to communicate with transportation office.
• Work irregular hours as required.
• Review transportation forms to ensure compliance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
• Complete required annual training.
• Maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA.

Tools/Equipment Used: School bus; two-way radio;
Global Positioning System (GPS); safety equipment including fire extinguisher and reflective signs; wheelchair lift/ramps; adaptive equipment.
Posture: Prolonged sitting and driving; frequent standing and twisting; occasional kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, and pushing/pulling.
Motion: Frequent climbing stairs, grasping/squeezing, wrist and shoulder flexion/extension, and reaching.
Lifting: Moderate lifting and carrying; may assist with lifting students or equipment.
Environment: Frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, noise, vehicle fumes, and moving vehicles or machinery; may work irregular or prolonged hours.
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress.
