Position: Senior Center Programs Specialist (30 hours/week - benefits eligible)

Assist the Senior Center Supervisor in providing recreational programming for senior citizens and other patrons of The Colony Senior Center. Communicate on a daily basis with the public and staff in an effective and courteous manner in person, in writing or by telephone.

Responsibilities
  • Provide exceptional customer service by assisting the public and answering questions concerning classes, memberships, activities, policies, etc. in a friendly, helpful manner.
  • Assist in preparing and coordinating a wide variety of events, classes, activities, programs, and day trips, which may include procuring supplies, scheduling entertainment, soliciting donations, setting up sites, monitoring events, preparing program outlines and other related activities.
  • Assist Senior Center Supervisor in developing, implementing and promoting a variety of recreational programs, activities and trips for the department PlayTC! catalog and the Senior Center monthly newsletter.
  • Assist in interacting with other agencies for innovative and creative programs and events.
  • Assist in preparing brochures, flyers and other promotional items for informational use.
  • Assist Senior Center Supervisor in developing, supporting, and training other Senior Center part time staff & volunteers.
  • Set‑up rooms for classes, meetings and activities.
  • Assist in coordination of scheduling the Senior Center and maintain a calendar of events and participation statistics.
  • Monitor activities at the Senior Center, answer phones, manage customer requests, and assist patrons.
  • Assist in preparing incident/accident/damage reports as needed.
  • Assist with departmental special events.
  • Acquire the necessary computer skills to handle registrations and general day‑to‑day activities to maintain accurate records of program registration.
  • Must have flexible schedule to be able to work days, evenings and weekends.
  • May be required to work in extreme weather conditions for activities or special events.
  • Assist in maintaining the cleanliness & safety of the Senior Center and respond to emergencies and first aid needs as necessary.
  • May be required to push, pull, carry or lift up to 60 pounds of equipment or furniture.
  • Must be comfortable working with the senior population and able to adapt to their needs to interact effectively.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Ability to use effective verbal and written communication skills with staff and public, as well as show effective leadership.
  • Ability to use good judgment in handling complaints, altercations and emergency situations.
  • Have a working knowledge of computer system and software, and copier.
  • Skilled with written communications with a capacity for attention to details.
  • Ability to be a self-starter and work with minimum supervision.
  • General knowledge of various recreational activities.
  • Working knowledge of and/or ability to learn Canva or other graphic programs, as well as Amilia or other recreation management programs.
  • Ability to program classes, informational programs, special events and day trips.
  • Must relate well and interact effectively with seniors.
Education & Certifications
  • High School diploma or GED with preference given to someone with college degree or hours in Recreation, Gerontology, or related field.
  • Recreation background preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain certification within 30 days of employment.
  • Valid Texas driver license.
