Job Description

The Substitute Preschool Teacher provides a nurturing, safe, and educational environment for young children in the absence of the regular classroom teacher on an as needed basis. This role involves implementing pre‑planned lessons, fostering a positive and inclusive classroom atmosphere, and ensuring the continuity of care and learning for preschool students. The Substitute Preschool Teacher is responsible for managing classroom activities, addressing the individual needs of students, and maintaining effective communication with other staff members to support the overall well‑being and development of the children.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and Testing
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance.
  • Valid Driver’s License and evidence of insurability.
  • Successful completion of district background screening.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Understand that young learners have first experiences in a school environment and may be their first experience with other children.
  • Knowledge of child reporting procedures.
  • Knowledge of supporting students through challenging behaviors.
  • Ability to enjoy interactions with and effectively supervise students from diverse cultural backgrounds or different abilities.
  • Ability to instruct a wide variety of students in a number of different situations.
  • Ability to understand the phases and temperaments of children and young adolescents at different growth and maturity levels.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in stressful situations.
  • Ability to operate basic office and audio‑visual equipment.
  • Ability to abide by the confidentiality rights of students and parents.
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
Essential Job Functions
  • Assist in maintaining an attractive and clean learning environment.
  • Assist in preparation of teaching aids and/or materials.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality; do not disclose information to parents or other personnel outside the school environment; refer all inquiries to the classroom teacher or administrator.
  • Establish and maintain a positive working relationship with ESD and district personnel.
Educational Skills – Language & Communication
  • Read and comprehend instructions, correspondence and memos.
  • Speak effectively with other employees and/or students.
Workplace Expectations
  • Work effectively with and respond to people from diverse cultures or backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and appropriate judgment in behavior, speech and dress in a neat, clean and appropriate professional manner for the assignment and work setting.
  • Have regular and punctual attendance.
  • Confer regularly with other ESD staff, ESD Districts, and immediate supervisor.
  • Follow all District policies, work procedures and reasonable requests by proper authority.
  • Maintain the integrity of confidential information relating to a student, family, colleague or District patron.
  • Demonstrate professional character in all job responsibilities and maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the agency.
Physical Requirements
  • Stand/Walk: 4–6 hrs per day.
  • Sit: 5–8 hrs per day.
  • Drive: 1–3 hrs per day.
  • Store repetitive hand activities: single grasping and pushing/pulling.
  • Bend, squat, climb stairs, lift: frequently or occasionally as required.
  • Light work lifting: 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Medium work lifting: 50 pounds occasionally.
Mandatory Child Abuse Reporting

As a mandatory reporter under ORS.
419b.010, you are required to immediately report to Law Enforcement or the Department of Human Services any instances of suspected child abuse.
