- 24/7 operation. Operators may work any assigned shifts, including evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends.
- Availability for overtime and work hours that may extend past a 12‑hour shift, over a 40‑hour workweek, or on a scheduled day off.
- Dependable attendance required.
- Ability to become certified through the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training.
- Type accurately at a minimum of 35 words per minute.
- Pass a written and multi‑tasking test.
This position serves as 911 Dispatch/Telecommunications Operator for all emergency responders and support agencies of Wasco County. Responsibilities include processing 911 calls, dispatching and maintaining contact with emergency personnel via two‑way radio, monitoring telephone/radio, entering and receiving data from computer systems, maintaining records/database, and preparing reports.
Essential Functions- Operate telephone, radio, and computer equipment to dispatch public safety resources and route calls accurately.
- Observe and report equipment malfunctions.
- Receive emergency and non‑emergency call information, dispatch calls, maintain unit activity status, and manage data entries in the law enforcement data system.
- Maintain telephone and radio logs.
- Relay and receive information from public and private organizations and notify/activate other service agencies.
- Maintain familiarity with major roads, streets, industrial areas, public buildings, and geographic locations in Wasco County.
- Perform other related duties as required or assigned.
Minimal influence on organization operations and budget. Responsibility confined to own work tasks. Public contact is part of duties.
Supervision of EmployeesNot responsible for supervisory functions; may orient or train new employees.
Interpersonal Skills/ContactsFrequent contact with departments, vendors, contractors, and the public. Requires negotiation, persuasion, tact, and sensitivity. Formal presentations may be required.
Working ConditionsWork environment is protected with few hazards. Occasional interruptions or changes in assignments. No significant personal risk.
Physical RequirementsLittle physical effort required; normal dexterity and hand‑eye coordination needed.
Education, Experience, and Certification/Licensure- Graduation from a senior high school or GED equivalent.
- One-year post‑high school education or vocational training.
- No specific licensure or certification required.
