Mechanical Engineer (Machine Design)Date posted: January 8, 2026
Pay: From $85,000.00 per year
Company SummaryLangmuir Systems is a fast-growing company that specializes in the design and manufacture of consumer-grade and light-industrial CNC machinery. We don’t just design parts; we design the machines that empower thousands of small businesses and makers to transition from manual to CNC. For more information, visit:
Position OverviewWe are seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer with a deep obsession for machine design. This is not a “cubicle-only” role; we need a hands‑on engineer who can bridge the gap between abstract physics and a shipping product. The ideal candidate has a “maker” mindset, a mastery of CAD/FEA, and a practical understanding of how to build rigid, high‑precision motion systems without industrial‑scale budgets.
Key Responsibilities- System Architecture: Design and develop mechanical systems, frames, and motion components for CNC plasma, milling, and turning equipment.
- Precision Modeling: Create detailed 3D CAD models and 2D production drawings using Autodesk Inventor
, prioritizing structural rigidity and ease of assembly. - Rigidity & Vibration Analysis: Perform complex calculations including tolerance stacks, bearing life/load, and vibration damping to ensure machine precision under load.
- FEA Validation: Conduct Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to optimize the strength-to-weight ratio of moving components (gantries, carriages, spindles).
- DFM & Cost Engineering: Select materials and fasteners that balance high performance with cost‑effective manufacturing (castings, extrusions, and precision sheet metal).
- Prototyping & Testing: Lead physical prototype builds, stress‑testing designs to failure, and implementing iterative improvements based on real‑world data.
- Technical Documentation: Direct the creation of BOMs, assembly guides, and maintenance manuals that make complex machinery accessible to our customers.
- Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum 5 years of professional experience in mechanical design, specifically focused on machines or moving assemblies
. - The Builder Mindset: Hands‑on experience with CNC machining, welding, or manual fabrication. You must understand the “feel” of the equipment you design.
- CAD Mastery: Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor or a comparable high‑end 3D CAD package.
- Structural Literacy: Strong understanding of GD&T and how it applies to real‑world manufacturing tolerances and assembly fitment.
- Citizenship: Must be authorized to work in the U.S.; sponsorship is not available.
- Motion Control Expertise: Familiarity with stepper/servo drive systems, ball screws, and linear motion hardware.
- Product Lifecycle
Experience:
A proven track record of taking a complex mechanical system from a “back of the napkin” concept to a mass‑produced consumer product. - Automation Knowledge: Experience with robotics or industrial automation integration.
- 401(k) & 401(k) matching
- Comprehensive Health, Dental, and Vision insurance
- Paid time off (PTO)
- Access to shop equipment
