Primary FunctionThe Design Engineer is responsible for contributing to the civil and site design of substation projects within Dashiell's Land Development Group. Working under supervision, this role prepares design documents, performs engineering calculations, and develops technical skills in substation site development. The position will be based in our The Woodlands, TX office located at 1575 Sawdust Rd, Suite 300 The Woodlands, TX 77380 and will report to Dashiell’s Supervising Engineer
. Successful candidates may be placed in a Design Engineer I, II or III title depending on skill and experience level. Candidates with more experience may be placed in higher positions.
- Prepare substation site layout plans, grading plans, erosion and sediment control plans, and drainage designs under engineer supervision.
- Perform engineering calculations for stormwater management, earthwork, and site utilities.
- Develop construction drawings and specifications using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
- Coordinate with geotechnical engineers and surveyors to incorporate field data into site designs.
- Assist in preparation and review of permit applications including land disturbance, stormwater, and access permits.
- Conduct site visits to assess existing conditions and support construction observation.
- Support project managers with design progress updates and deliverable tracking.
- Perform special projects and complete other duties as assigned or requested.
- Deliver quality site design drawings that enable efficient substation construction and reduce field conflicts.
- Support on-time permitting by preparing thorough and accurate regulatory submittals.
- Strengthen the Land Development Group's technical capacity through growing design proficiency.
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related engineering discipline required.
- Minimum 1 year of civil site design or related engineering experience.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification preferred.
- Working knowledge of civil site design including grading, drainage, and stormwater management.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D or similar civil design software.
- Understanding of applicable codes including local grading ordinances, NPDES/stormwater regulations, and land use requirements.
- Ability to perform engineering calculations and prepare technical reports.
- Strong attention to detail in preparation of engineering drawings and specifications.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Familiarity with substation or heavy civil site construction is a plus.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Ability to sit for extended periods during office-based work.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during field visits.
- Ability to walk on uneven terrain, gravel, and graded surfaces.
- Ability to navigate active construction environments including stairs, ramps, and temporary walkways.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, FR clothing, and hearing protection.
- Ability to travel to project sites as required.
- Combination of climate-controlled office work and outdoor construction environments.
- Exposure to varying weather conditions including heat, cold, wind, and rain.
- Exposure to noise, dust, and industrial conditions during site visits.
This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with Dashiell's motor vehicle policies. Incumbents must maintain an acceptable driving record throughout employment.
