Position Summary

The Corporate Safety Director is a senior leader responsible for shaping and executing the company’s safety strategy across all waste collection, recycling, and disposal operations. This role supports a field team of Regional Safety Managers and the Corporate Safety Manager to ensure consistent implementation of safety programs, regulatory compliance, and a proactive safety culture. Reporting directly to the CEO, the Director will drive continuous improvement in safety performance, risk mitigation, and employee well‑being across all sites and fleets.

Key Responsibilities Strategic Leadership
  • Develop and lead a comprehensive safety strategy tailored to the unique risks and operational realities of the waste management industry.
  • Serve as the primary safety advisor to the CEO and executive leadership team.
  • Champion a safety‑first culture across all business units, including collection, transfer stations, recycling facilities, landfills, and waste‑to‑energy.
Team Oversight
  • Support and mentor Regional Safety Managers operating in multi‑state markets (For example: Texas, California, Florida, and Nebraska).
  • Manage the Corporate Safety Manager and all programs under their area of responsibility, such as PPE and DOT compliance.
  • Ensure consistent execution of safety programs, including New Hire Orientation, Refresher Training, and Post‑Incident Training.
Compliance & Risk Management
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, EPA, and state‑specific regulations governing solid waste operations.
  • Lead investigations and root cause analyses for serious incidents, including vehicle accidents and facility‑related injuries.
  • Monitor and analyze safety metrics (e.g., TRIR, DOT accident rates) to identify trends and drive corrective actions.
Operational Safety Support
  • Oversee facility and fleet safety inspections, hazard assessments, and corrective action plans.
  • Collaborate with Operations and Fleet teams to implement site‑specific safety plans and equipment protocols.
  • Support emergency response planning and business continuity efforts.
Reporting & Communication
  • Maintain accurate safety records and ensure timely reporting to regulatory agencies.
  • Communicate safety performance, initiatives, and compliance updates to executive leadership and field teams.
  • Represent the company in industry forums and regulatory discussions.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Occupational Health, Safety Engineering, or the equivalent in years of service: 10 years of experience in the EHS field.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive safety and/or operations leadership experience, preferably in waste management, logistics, or industrial operations.
  • Proven experience with time management, prioritization, and project management.
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA, DOT, and environmental regulations specific to the waste industry.
  • Proven ability to effectively influence a geographically dispersed safety team, as well as influence across all levels of the organization.
  • Experience with safety metrics, risk assessments, and regulatory audits.
  • Bilingual capabilities are a plus in Spanish/English.
  • Intermediate MS Office Suite user (e.g., Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.).
Preferred Certifications
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or equivalent.
Minimum Required Education
  • High School Diploma.
Required Experience
  • Experience with time management skills, prioritizing, and meeting deadline expectations.
  • Basic computer skills;
    Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive safety leadership experience, preferably in waste management, logistics, or industrial operations.
  • Bi‑lingual a plus, but not required.
