Position: APRN or Physician Assistant - DI Academic Services / Woodlands

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or Physician Assistant) to join the Diagnostic Imaging (DI) Division. This role is ideal for an APP with an interest in radiology and experience managing patients in acute or urgent care settings. APRN candidates must hold a Family/Individual Across the Lifespan specialty certification.

This position provides comprehensive patient care before, during, and after diagnostic and interventional radiology procedures in both inpatient and outpatient environments, under the supervision of a licensed physician.

Schedule & Coverage
  • Work Schedule:

    Monday-Friday
  • Shifts:

    Four 10.5-11-hour shifts per week
  • Coverage Area:
    • Primary coverage across Diagnostic Imaging locations in The Woodlands and Northwest Houston
    • Intermittent cross‑coverage across all Diagnostic Imaging locations as needed

Key Responsibilities Patient Care & Clinical Management
  • Respond to and manage emergency events occurring within Diagnostic Imaging, including but not limited to:
    • Allergic or contrast reactions
    • Respiratory distress
    • Falls, seizures, glycemic events
    • Port extravasation or incidental cord compression
  • Conduct focused histories and physical examinations relevant to diagnostic imaging procedures
  • Manage pre‑, intra‑, and post‑procedure care for both inpatient and outpatient populations
  • Perform sedation assessments per institutional policy (ASA, airway classification, ECOG scoring)
  • Order, interpret, and document appropriate laboratory and diagnostic studies
  • Prescribe medications and manage anticoagulation, transfusions, contrast use, and post‑procedural pain within scope of practice
  • Triage patients and cases appropriately and coordinate care with primary and specialty services
  • Protocol imaging studies ordered by non‑radiology providers to ensure proper exam selection
Clinical Practice
  • Conduct consults, follow‑up visits, and pre‑procedure/pre‑treatment evaluations
  • Provide care across multiple DI subspecialties, including Nuclear Medicine, Neuroradiology, and Breast Imaging
  • Identify and manage periprocedural clinical issues such as hypertension, hypotension, electrolyte abnormalities, and diabetes management
  • Collaborate closely with Diagnostic Imaging physicians and the patient’s primary care team
Research & Education
  • Participate in clinical research initiatives
  • Assist with data collection, patient education, and informed consent as delegated
Documentation, Compliance & Communication
  • Practice within E&M billing and compliance regulations
  • Provide clear, accurate, and timely medical documentation
  • Demonstrate strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Serve as an integral member of the multidisciplinary care team

EDUCATION
  • Required:

    Master’s Degree Nursing or Doctorate Nursing Practice
  • Degree may be waived for applicants who obtained recognition as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse from the Texas State Board of Nursing prior to 1/1/2003
  • Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population
WORK EXPERIENCE
  • Required:

    None
  • Preferred:
    Two years of experience as an Advanced Practice Provider
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Required:

    Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse upon hire

    APRN or equivalent practitioner license upon hire (list includes various NP specializations)
