Salary range: $45,000.00–$64,200.00. This range includes State Supplemental Pay for employees who are P.O.S.T. Level I certified. Additional pay differentials are available for college education, military service, and prior law enforcement experience.
JOB SUMMARYThe “K-9 Deputy” is teamed with a canine to produce a two-member, specially trained, law enforcement unit which functions to provide search, tracking, criminal apprehension, and crowd control capabilities in the performance of a variety of basic law enforcement duties during assigned 12-hour night shifts.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Solely responsible for the handling and management of assigned canine in the performance of law enforcement duties and activities
- Perform weekly training with canine in the appropriate responses to commands required in conducting building searches, area searches, narcotics searches, tracking, criminal apprehension, and crowd control
- Maintain training logs pertaining to weekly trainings
- Perform maintenance activities of the kennel by cleaning the housing area; clean and oil leashes, harnesses, and collars
- Feed and provide all other care for assigned canine including making sure the animal is properly groomed; wash, brush, and trim animals coat to clean and improve appearance
- Inspect the canine to check for diseases, illness, and injury; ensure proper medical treatment is provided
- Bring the canine to the authorized veterinarian for annual and/or routine examinations, inoculations, etc.
- Proficient with Central Square (digital records management system) and all databases utilized by the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office
- Patrol assigned areas to enforce laws, investigate crimes, and arrest violators
- Investigate illegal or suspicious activities of persons; quell disturbances, and arrest law violators
- Operate radio to receive instructions and notify superiors of work efforts in progress
- Complete detailed reports regarding all crimes and other incidents where a response by the K-9 Deputy has occurred
- Preserve crime scenes until superiors and investigators arrive
- Maintain weapons and equipment in functional and clean condition
- Collect, secure, and properly transport all evidence to assigned location
- Promptly and accurately serve and/or deliver warrants and other official papers, as instructed
- Conduct security checks of property, businesses, and buildings
- Observe and question suspicious persons and complete field interview worksheets for intelligence gathering purposes
- Cooperate with efforts of other law enforcement agencies in conducting investigations/operations and joint law enforcement efforts
- Assist in providing warnings to the general public before, during, and after emergencies/disasters; assist in the facilitation of public evacuation efforts
- Perform the duties of a “Deputy”
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and ExperienceJobholders must successfully complete 200 hours (depending on K-9 prior training) of K-9 Academy training. Additional education and experience also include associate’s degree or equivalent from a university or college or, six (6) months to one (1) year related experience and/or training; or, equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
Language SkillsAbility to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; ability to write routine reports and correspondence; ability to speak effectively before groups of citizens and/or other employees.
