Perinatal Manager

About this positionThe Perinatal Manager is a direct supervisor and team leader responsible for ensuring high quality patient care, staffing, compliance, and unit performance.
Responsibilities- Serve as a role model by providing direct patient care and demonstrating consideration of age- and population-specific needs.
- Assist the Director in assuring high quality patient care, monitoring staff performance, and providing instruction.
- Oversee patient care delivery in a secure and therapeutic environment.
- Coordinate admissions, transfers, discharges, and collaboration with inpatient and outpatient services.
- Coordinate staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage; maximize manpower utilization based on patient acuity and staffing guidelines; account for staff skill mix.
- Monitor staff customer service performance and notify the Director of positives and concerns.
- Communicate policies and procedures and monitor staff performance.
- Assess individual patient needs from admission to discharge, involving the patient/family in assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care.
- Demonstrate knowledge of principles of growth and development throughout the lifespan and provide appropriate age care.
- Recognize and report changes in patient status; assess the patient for signs of labor; triage patients based on EMTALA guidelines; assess risk of hemorrhage, VTE, hypertensive crisis, and other life‑threatening illnesses.
- Assess fetal intrauterine activity and bonding between the newborn and mother.
- Assess feeding choices, educate based on feeding options, and assess breastfeeding needs.
- Maintain couple care by keeping mother and baby together; consistently document fetal heart rate and uterine activity.
- Prepare the patient and room for delivery, vaginal or caesarean.
- Assist with breastfeeding.
- Participate with the Director in recruitment, staff selection, training, mentoring, retention, counseling, and performance evaluations.
- Monitor availability of supplies and plan replacement of necessary items; purchase new items to assure efficient operations.
- Work with the Director to ensure compliance with regulatory and accrediting agency specifications, meeting federal, state, and local regulations (Conditions of Participation, DHR, HIPAA, EMTALA).
- Understand the unit operating budget and participate in expense management.
- Meet or exceed unit-related goals identified on the hospital quality scorecard.
- Understand unit-based Performance Improvement Plan and track unit performance using PDCA methodology.
- Round on staff, patients, physicians, and departments to identify opportunities for recognition and improvement.
- Provide service recovery for customers.
- Maintain open communication with all staff through meetings, email, and other methods; keep Director and Administration informed of department activities and significant events.
- Promote safe hand‑off communication among team members.
- Demonstrate excellent customer service and conduct duties in a positive, customer‑friendly manner towards all customers of the department.
- Maintain awareness of patient experience scores and target areas of needed improvement.
- Ensure new employees are oriented to units and units they may float to.
- Communicate hospital/unit policies and procedures; participate in department in‑service programs; identify staff knowledge gaps and support annual competency requirements.
- Take responsibility for personal professional development.
- Handle notifications of tardiness/attendance and follow attendance guidelines.
- Plan for succession by developing and educating others.
- Develop a nursing diagnosis based on assessment and physician diagnosis; recognize symptoms of labor, hemorrhage, uterine abruption.
- Plan individualized care based on nursing and medical diagnosis; plan management of infant at delivery and coordinate care with ancillary departments and physicians.
- Identify patient and infant needs, including physical, emotional, cultural, and spiritual aspects.
- Implement interdisciplinary plan of care; document ongoing patient care to reflect the nursing process; prescribe high quality care according to hospital and department quality measures.
- Evaluate patient care, document goals, and revise care plan according to patient response; review diagnostic studies, prenatal records, other outpatient records; report and document abnormal and critical findings according to policy.
- Associate’s Degree
- Bachelor’s Degree (preferred)
- Master’s Degree (preferred)
- Active GA RN license
- NRP (may obtain within 6 months after hire)
- BLS
- ACLS (may obtain within 6 months after hire)
- Must have labor and delivery experience.
- Minimum 2 years of experience that includes triaging the patient.
