The In-School Suspension (ISS) and Behavior Support Assistant plays a dual role in maintaining a structured, restorative, and supportive school environment. This position supports students assigned to ISS by ensuring academic engagement and behavioral reflection, while also working proactively with students across the school to address and improve behavior and social-emotional skills. The goal is to foster accountability, conflict resolution, and a positive learning environment.

• Supervise students in ISS, ensuring completion of academic work and adherence to school rules.
• Provide a structured, reflective environment focused on behavior improvement and academic accountability.
• Collaborate with teachers to obtain, monitor, and support completion of student assignments.
• Track academic and behavioral progress of students in ISS and report findings to teachers and administrators.
• Address behavioral issues promptly using de-escalation and restorative practices.
• Maintain accurate records of student behavior, assignments, incidents, and progress while in ISS.

• Provide direct support to students displaying behavioral or emotional challenges in ISS, classrooms, or common areas.
• Assist students in developing coping strategies, social skills, and conflict resolution abilities.
• Conduct one-on-one or small group sessions focused on behavior topics (e.g., anger management, emotional regulation, communication).
• Monitor students with repeated behavioral issues and implement interventions in collaboration with teachers, counselors, and administrators.
• Support the implementation of school-wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and restorative practices.

• Partner with staff and families to support student behavior and social-emotional growth.
• Serve as a role model for positive behavior, communication, and problem-solving.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding student records, behavior, and personal information.

Education & Certification Requirements:

• High School Diploma or equivalent required , and one of the following:
• • Associate’s Degree, OR
  • 48 semester hours of college coursework, OR
  • Work Keys/Community College Placement Test AND 96 contact hours in Reading, Writing, and Math
• CPR and First Aid Certification preferred (or ability to obtain within first year)

Experience &

Skills:

• Experience working with middle school-aged students in education or behavior support preferred
• Knowledge of behavior management, de-escalation, and restorative practices
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and documentation skills
• Ability to remain calm and patient in high-pressure situations
• Understanding of student confidentiality, safety, and behavior policy guidelines

• Daily interaction with students in various school environments
• Requires frequent standing, walking, and student engagement
• Ability to lift/move up to 25 lbs
• May involve managing students displaying distress or disruptive behavior
• Use of standard office and educational equipment (computers, copiers, etc.)

• Communicate effectively in oral and written English
• Follow instructions and school protocols
• Use judgment to solve problems and apply interventions consistently
• Adapt to stressful environments and manage emotionally intense situations
• Maintain accurate documentation and records
• Establish positive working relationships with students, staff, and families
• Apply knowledge of school rules, behavior expectations, and classroom procedures
