Job Description SUMMARY

The Director of Operations and Maintenance oversees the planning, coordination, and execution of all district facilities, grounds, transportation (if applicable), and maintenance operations. In a small district, this role is both strategic and hands‑on—ensuring safe, clean, efficient, and well‑maintained learning environments while managing limited resources effectively.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Leadership & Management
  • Supervise and evaluate maintenance, custodial, and grounds staff; may also oversee transportation.
  • Develop work schedules, assign tasks, and monitor completion of preventive and corrective maintenance.
  • Provide training, mentorship, and performance feedback to staff.
  • Assist in hiring and onboarding of operations/transportation personnel.
Facilities & Maintenance
  • Oversee daily maintenance of all district buildings, systems, and equipment (HVAC, plumbing, etc.).
  • Facilitate/manage the use of vendors for maintenance and repair of systems and equipment (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, etc.)
  • Implement and manage a preventive maintenance program to extend the life of facilities and assets.
  • Coordinate and perform inspections of facilities to ensure safety, compliance, and operational efficiency. Prepare building for annual/semi-annual formal inspections.
  • Respond to urgent maintenance issues and emergencies, including after‑hours situations when necessary.
  • Lead campus snow removal operations.
Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., OSHA, fire codes, health and safety standards).
  • Maintain and update safety plans, inspection records, and compliance documentation.
  • Serve as the district liaison for safety inspections and audits.
  • Oversee environmental compliance (asbestos, hazardous materials, etc., as applicable).
  • Manage chemicals/paints associated with building cleaning/maintenance in compliance with health and safety standards.
Budgeting & Resource Management
  • Manage the operations and maintenance budget.
  • Prioritize projects and expenditures based on district needs and available funding.
  • Track inventory, supplies, and equipment; ensure cost‑effective purchasing.
  • Seek efficiencies and cost‑saving opportunities without compromising safety or quality.
Project Management
  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee small construction, renovation, and capital improvement projects.
  • Work with contractors, architects, and vendors; monitor timelines and quality of work.
  • Ensure projects are completed within budget and meet district standards.
Grounds & Facilities Appearance
  • Oversee maintenance of district grounds, including landscaping, snow removal, and playground.
  • Ensure facilities are clean, functional, and present a positive environment for students and the community.
Transportation Oversight
  • Supervise transportation operations, including routing, vehicle maintenance, and driver compliance.
  • Facilitate annual inspection requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and state transportation regulations.
Communication & Collaboration
  • Work closely with school administrators to address site‑specific needs.
  • Communicate regularly with the Superintendent regarding operations, priorities, and issues.
  • Serve as a point of contact for staff and community concerns related to facilities and operations.
  • Manage community use facility needs and staffing.
QUALIFICATIONS Education & Experience
  • Associate’s/Bachelor’s degree in facilities management, construction management, business administration, or a related field preferred.
  • Relevant experience may substitute for formal education.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in facilities, maintenance, or operations management.
  • Experience in a school district or public sector setting, preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing).
  • Strong organizational and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities with limited resources.
