Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Director of Nursing, the Charge Nurse is responsible for overseeing nursing staff and ensuring the delivery of high-quality care to the residents in Sedgwick County Health Center’s long term care setting. As a liaison between nursing staff, care providers, management and residents, the Charge Nurse coordinates and monitors resident care, manages staffing, and manages medication while addressing any clinical or operation issues that arise.

Success in this role requires the ability to work collaboratively with the Interdisciplinary Team while following and ensuring compliance with all regulatory standards, facility policies and best practices.

The ideal candidate will be compassionate, and skilled in best nursing practices while demonstrating strong communication skills, patience, adaptability and a commitment to improving the well‑being of residents in a long‑term care setting.

  • Direct the daily activities of certified nursing assistants in compliance with regulations and facility policies.
  • Observe and assess residents for changes in condition and communicate updates to physicians and families.
  • Transcribe and carry out physician orders, administer medications, and observe for adverse effects.
  • Perform wound treatments per physician’s orders and document changes accordingly.
  • Schedule follow‑up appointments and transportation for residents as needed.
  • Provide direct nursing care, including IV administration, tube feedings, wound care, and colostomy changes.
  • Conduct rounds to ensure resident needs are met and nursing staff perform assigned duties.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to provide holistic resident care.
  • Report incidents, complaints, and unusual occurrences, participating in investigations as required.
  • Assist with end‑of‑life care and ensure the availability of necessary medical supplies.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Nursing degree from an accredited program (RN or LPN/LVN)
  • CPR certification.
  • Experience in long‑term care preferred.

    • Accurate documentation and reporting of resident data and care plans
    • Excellent verbal and written communication
    • Ability to complete a medication pass competently in the allotted time frame
    • Strong problem‑solving and decision‑making skills
Experience Preferred
  • Knowledge
    • Comprehensive understand of nursing principles, practices, and standards of care
    • Expertise in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating resident care
    • Familiarity with federal, state, and local healthcare regulations, including HIPPA
    • Understands ethical standards while ensuring resident centered care
    • Understands medication drug classes, usages, dosages, side effects and contraindications
Education and Certification Requirements
  • Nursing degree from an accredited program (RN or LPN/LVN)
  • CPR certification.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift, move, push, or pull up to 100 pounds
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and stand for extended period of time
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in high‑stress situations
  • Ability to handle emergencies and unexpected situations effectively
  • Ability to receive and follow through with instructions
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and independently
  • Ability to delegate tasks and supervise the performance of nursing staff
  • Ability to have sufficient visual and auditory acuity to monitor resident status and communicate effectively

All positions of Sedgwick County Health Center are part of an interdisciplinary team, and as such, participate in the care and service delivery process through effective interaction with other team members. Reports to the Director of Nursing.

  • Frequent Physical Demands
    • Standing and walking for extended periods, up to 8-12 hours per shift
    • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to perform nursing tasks such as administering injections, operating medical equipment, performing medication administration, and completing documentation
