Fleet Mechanic I performs entry‑level inspection, preventative maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and heavy equipment. The position requires basic mechanical knowledge, problem‑solving ability, and basic skills using available materials and tools. Work is performed under general supervision with significant independent judgment, and results are reviewed through completed work performance.

Fleet Mechanic II is a skilled and motivated member of the City’s Fleet Division, responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, preventative maintenance, and repair of the City’s gasoline and diesel powered vehicles, heavy equipment, and small motors to ensure safe and reliable fleet operations. The position involves performing journeyman‑level mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic repairs on equipment while complying with all City policies and safety regulations.

• Diagnose basic mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic issues on gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment under supervision.
• Perform minor and major repair work on light and heavy‑duty vehicles and equipment, including automated refuse trucks, backhoes, wheel loaders, and other large and small equipment.
• Repair and replace components such as brakes, steering parts, batteries, belts, hoses, and suspension components under supervision with training.
• Change tires on small and large equipment with guidance as needed.
• Perform routine preventative maintenance services such as oil changes, fluid checks, filter replacements, and lubrication with training.
• Assist with vehicle emission testing and related documentation.
• Assist with badging, outfitting, and setup of new vehicles and equipment.
• Perform basic vehicle and equipment inspections to identify visible mechanical deficiencies and report findings to lead mechanics or supervisors.
• Assist with fabrication, modification, and repair of parts using shop tools and available materials.
• Work as part of a team and follow instructions while developing independent work skills.
• Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repair activities on work orders under supervision.
• Read and interpret maintenance manuals, diagrams, and technical instructions.
• Follow all City safety rules, environmental regulations, and workplace policies at all times.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members regarding work progress, equipment condition, and safety concerns.
• Perform additional entry‑level mechanical and shop support duties as assigned.
