Job Summary
Highway Maintenance Specialist responsible for maintaining roadway safety and conditions in Empire, CO. Must hold a Colorado Class A/B Commercial Driver’s License and be prepared for on‑call, shift, and emergency work.
Key Responsibilities- Plow snow and clear roadways of debris, rock, mud, and deceased animals.
- Operate heavy equipment (tandem dump truck, loader, tractor mower, bulldozers, backhoes).
- Mow grass and weeds, dig ditches, wash gravel, sand, concrete and asphalt.
- Install and repair guardrails, highway markers, signs, lighting and pavement markings.
- Fill potholes and crack repair using appropriate materials.
- Set out signs and cones for traffic control and remove/cover graffiti.
- Stop or slow traffic in emergency situations.
- Maintain equipment and perform minor repairs.
- Follow safety guidance and wear required personal protective equipment.
- Work on‑call on a rotating basis and respond to weather emergencies.
Exposure to loud noise, fumes, gases, dusts, chemicals, high‑speed traffic, and work at elevations up to 12,000 ft. Requires use of PPE, driving CDOT vehicles, and availability for overtime, weekends, and holidays.
CompensationAnnual salary $77,930 (base $53,930 and $24,000 housing stipend). Biweekly pay $2,074.39. Overtime $38.89/hour.
Minimum Qualifications- At least 2 years of physical labor and/or heavy equipment operation.
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or
B) with no air brake restriction. - Pass pre‑employment screening, including background checks and DOT medical/physical.
- Commitment to safety and willingness to learn.
- Experience operating single and tandem axle dump trucks, loaders, bulldozers, backhoes, etc.
- Proficiency with hand tools and basic computer skills.
- Experience in state service related to duties of the position.
- On‑call and shift work, including overtime, weekends, and holidays.
- May be required to live within 30 minutes of the work location.
- Required to complete two weeks of maintenance training for new hires; existing staff require one week per year.
- May need Hazardous Materials endorsement within 6‑12 months.
