Niel Smith joined the military out of a need and desire to serve. He now finds himself as a Senior Manager, Amgen Contract and Development Manufacturing at Amgen Thousand Oaks – this time, serving our patients.
"Before joining Amgen, I served in the United States Army as a tank crewman. In addition to being a member of the Amgen Veteran Employee Network (AVEN), I am also a member of our Recognition of Indigenous Peoples, Values and Environmental Resources (RIVER) ERG.
I joined the military coming out of high school. Service wasn't foremost on my mind growing up, but as a young adult, I was looking for purpose and direction. At the very least, I would be learning some technical skills that could also be useful later in life. What I didn't expect upon enlisting was how much life experience the army would give me.
It doesn't really matter what you look like or where you come from. What really matters is that your teammates can trust you to do the job at hand.
Biopharmaceutical Operations Counsel
"As a child of immigrants, I felt that serving my country was a small price to pay for the lifetime of freedom that I was blessed with by simply being born in the United States.
During my Marine Corps career, I had the honor of serving on both the East and West coasts of the U.S., Japan for 3 tours, and visited a variety of overseas locations.
In the military, I served my country and now I serve patients. I was able to join Amgen through its Hiring Our Heroes Corporate Fellowship Program, a 12-week paid leave of absence from the military where the service member gains critical corporate experience while they are transitioning out of the military. The fellowship allowed me to demonstrate the value I could add.
I now provide practical legal advice to global operations, global regulatory affairs, and safety client groups at Amgen.
Senior Manager, Value & Access
"Prior to Amgen, I spent eight years as an Infantry officer in the US Army. The most common reaction I get when telling my former military colleagues that I work for Amgen is that my new career is completely different than my old one . In many ways, that is quite true. But while my daily habits have changed quite a bit, the ability to be of service to others in a way that helps create the kind of change I want to see in the world is something that has remained consistent.
Since joining the company, I have been fortunate to serve on teams bringing transformative therapies to lung cancer patients. Outside of Amgen, I enjoy working for non - profit veteran organizations such as Service to School, which helps reduce barriers to higher education by providing free college and graduate school application…
