Environmental Science Associates (ESA) is a 100% employee‑owned environmental consulting firm. We plan, design, permit, mitigate, and restore for projects across our communities, infrastructure systems, open spaces, and wildlands. We are 50 years strong in 21 offices across California, the Pacific Northwest, and the southeastern United States. ESA is actively seeking On‑Call Archaeological Field Technicians in the Southern California area who are familiar with working on active construction sites, completing DPR forms, and are knowledgeable of archaeological materials common to the region.
Candidates must have a minimum of one year of field experience or relative academic experience in Southern California, live within commuting distance to Southern California ESA office locations, and be open and willing to travel for various on‑site field work.
- You are an effective team member experienced in archaeological and/or paleontological monitoring, surveys, and documentation of archaeological and/or paleontological resources in accordance with applicable local, state, and federal guidelines and requirements.
- You live within a commuting distance to Southern California ESA office locations for various projects based throughout Southern California.
- You hold a Bachelor's degree or higher in archaeology, anthropology, paleontology, or a related field, and demonstrate ability to use app‑based software for field recordation and mapping.
- You are familiar with working on active construction sites, completing DPR forms, and are knowledgeable of archaeological materials common to the region; you have a minimum of one year of field experience or relative academic field experience in Southern California.
- Qualified candidates must be open to travel as needed for projects and site visits. Mileage and travel reimbursements will be provided consistent with the project contract.
- You enjoy fieldwork, can walk long distances carrying a backpack, and are able to lift at least 50 pounds. Candidates should be confident working outside, in remote and rural settings, as well as in urban environments. Physical outdoor work may include, but may not be limited to, work in all types of weather, traversing uneven ground and sometimes steep terrain in forested environments, fields, arid lands, along stream banks, and in coastal/intertidal areas.
Some night and/or weekend work may be required. - You possess a valid driver's license and have experience driving 4‑wheel‑drive vehicles off‑road.
ESA is looking for on‑call archaeological field technicians to support field projects in Southern California. Qualified candidates must demonstrate the ability to perform all aspects of archaeological and/or paleontological monitoring and familiarity working on construction sites, coordinating with construction personnel, and interacting with Native American monitors.
- Monitor construction activities and identify archaeological and/or paleontological resources.
- Effectively communicate with construction crews and project personnel.
- Write and maintain written daily survey, monitoring, recordation, and cataloging logs, including utilizing electronic data collection tools and GIS mapping applications.
- Perform other ad‑hoc tasks as needed.

CompensationPay range: $24.34 – $34.08 USD per hour.
