Controls Engineer

Job Description

The Electrical Design Engineer is responsible for designing new products and improving existing designs to support machine development, customization, and refurbish/rebuild projects. This role works closely with cross-functional engineering teams and under the guidance of a Design Engineer to develop control systems, electrical hardware, and related documentation. The position also involves direct customer interaction, troubleshooting, and collaboration with internal departments to support successful project execution.

Responsibilities Include

* Design and develop electrical systems for new and existing products used in industrial machinery applications.

* Support redesign and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance performance, reliability, and safety of existing machinery.

* Collaborate with mechanical, controls, and manufacturing engineering teams to define optimal design specifications and ensure cohesive system integration.

* Perform control hardware design, electrical wiring development, and software creation under the guidance of a Design Engineer.

* Create and maintain bills of material (BOMs), part definitions, and detailed electrical drawings for assigned projects.

* Diagnose electrical malfunctions and work directly with customers or internal teams to identify root causes and define appropriate corrective actions.

* Provide clear guidance and documentation for repair procedures to support internal teams and end users.

* Prepare sales-related engineering documentation, including cost estimates, technical quotes, and project scope of supply descriptions.

* Support machine design, customization, and refurbish or rebuild projects from initial concept through final implementation and commissioning.

* Work closely with sales, aftermarket, purchasing, manufacturing, and assembly teams to resolve engineering-related issues and ensure timely project delivery.

* Communicate directly with vendors to obtain technical information, components, and engineering support necessary for project execution.

* Participate in direct customer interactions, including limited domestic and international travel, to support project requirements and technical discussions.

* Perform other engineering-related duties as assigned based on business needs.

Skills & Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field

* Ability to work independently and accomplish objectives with minimal supervision

* Strong customer service mindset with the ability to represent the company at customer sites

* Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally, including overnight travel

* Ability to make sound engineering decisions independently when working at customer facilities

* Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications

* Experience working with CAD software for electrical design

* Hands-on experience with PLCs, HMIs, or similar control hardware and software platforms

* Experience with variable frequency drives (VFDs), including commissioning and diagnostics

* Experience with servo motor selection, programming, and diagnostics

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Tiffin, OH.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $48.00/hr.
