General Summary
The Charge Nurse is responsible for providing a clear line of authority and accountability in the absence of the CNO and/or Departmental Managers. Functions in a role to facilitate operations of the hospital, implementation of changes, and enhance staff accountability. Serves as clinician with advanced clinical knowledge and skills.

Required
- Education:
Graduate of an accredited Registered Nurse program and currently licensed as a Registered Nurse of the State of Ohio. - Certification: BLS for the Healthcare Provider through the AHA. Have or be able to obtain ACLS and PALS within six months of hire. Must have or be willing to obtain NRP, dysrhythmia and critical care classes.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities.
- Performs nursing skills and operates specific nursing equipment.
- Interprets hospital policies and procedures.
- Handles confidential information.
- Assists managers in providing general supervision to hospital employees.
- Works in patient care environment with frequent exposure to communicable diseases, biohazardous waste/materials, and offensive odors.
- Prolonged standing, walking, stooping/bending, along with lifting, turning, and positioning of patients. Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
- Occasional exposure to injury due to combative or abusive patients.
- Work may be fatiguing and emotionally stressful.
- Frequent and prolonged exposure to excessive noise due to unit activities.
- Frequently exposed to mental strain caused by a fast‑paced environment and information from multiple sources.
The Charge Nurse is a licensed professional nurse responsible for delivery of patient care and teaching through the nursing process. The Charge Nurse may delegate responsibilities/activities of other nursing personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing, and the established policies and procedures of the organization. The Charge Nurse assists in orientation of new personnel and assumes a leadership role as assigned.
