The vegetable entomology research laboratory conducts investigation into how pest insects affect vegetable productivity in Georgia and how to best control these pests. Current tasks include maintaining insect (e.g., whitefly and diamondback moth) colonies, collecting and processing samples, entering data, rapidly identifying and counting small insects under a stereo microscope, maintaining plant food for insect colonies, planting seeds/seedlings for colonies and/or research tests, scouting, and other duties related to entomological field research.
Responsibilities- Rapidly identify and count small insects under stereo microscope magnification.
- Assist with insect colonies.
- Maintain plant food for insect colonies.
- Plant seeds/seedlings for colonies and/or research tests.
- Scout for pest insects.
- Process samples (frozen or in alcohol) on a scheduled time each week.
- Check colonies and plants that maintain these colonies twice weekly.
- Participate in weekly lab meetings to determine additional duties.
High School diploma preferred. Physical demands include looking through the stereo microscope for extended periods, lifting soil tubs and standard potting trays with full pots, being on-time for assigned work times, driving, and performing some field work.
