Research Professional-CSS (Brown), Tifton

Position Summary:

The role supports Peanut Breeding researchers in the Dept. of Crop and Soil Sciences, working under Dr. Nino Brown. Responsibilities include investigating genetic control of agronomic and crop quality traits, developing DNA markers, and applying advanced breeding and phenotyping techniques to accelerate genetic gain.

Qualifications

  • Minimum:
    High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of related experience.
  • Preferred:
    Bachelor’s degree in an agricultural related field.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine field maintenance: cultivation, spraying, fertilization, irrigation.
  • Conduct tissue sampling, plant and plot harvesting, peanut grading and shelling, seed packaging, and planting.
  • Collect and record data in the field and lab.
  • Assist researchers, graduate students, technicians, and student workers in achieving research goals.
  • Operate and calibrate sprayers, fertilizer applicators, and related equipment.
  • Maintain research and farm implements, prepare and plant breeding research plots, monitor crop development, and adjust irrigation, fertility, and pest management.
  • Manage local field trials and travel to off‑site locations as required (peak travel during planting and harvest).
  • Use specialized peanut equipment and general lab equipment including shelling equipment, moisture meters, scales.
  • Maintain and calibrate laboratory and peanut‑specific equipment.
  • Follow safety and quality‑control procedures while handling equipment and conducting laboratory tasks.
  • Record and document data accurately to support research and reporting.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance and repair of equipment.
  • Process and reconcile purchase card transactions, monitor activity, prepare monthly reports, resolve discrepancies, and ensure compliance with financial policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Competence in calibrating sprayers and fertilizer applicators; math skills.
  • Crop management competency.
  • Basic mechanical, welding, and carpentry skills.
  • Understanding of precision required for agricultural research.
  • Ability to maintain research and farm implements for optimal operation.

Physical Demands

  • Lift 50 lb items repeatedly in heat.
  • Operate and haul farm equipment.
  • Bend, walk, climb repeatedly for long hours.
  • Work outside in dusty, hot, humid conditions all day.
  • Drive as needed.
