JOB TITLE: Instructional Assistant 1 - Cafeteria Duty

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Building Administrator

FTE: 0.375 (3 hrs/day) 10:30am-1:30pm

GENERAL DUTIES

SUMMARY:

Assists or lends support to licensed teachers, or under the direction of other staff in a supervisory role. Performs student supervision tasks of limited variety and moderate complexity.

Essential Requirements & Responsibilities
  • Make independent judgments within prescribed policies and procedures
  • Employ good judgment in a variety of situations, including emergencies
  • Work with a variety of students and demonstrate a willingness to gain the necessary training to work effectively
  • Possess the characteristics and understanding to be an effective member of an educational support team
  • Comprehend and follow oral and written instructions and complete work within established timelines
  • Communicate with the appropriate student age group requiring both empathetic and disciplinarian approaches
  • Maintain a confidential, non-preferential, non-judgmental attitude toward students, staff, and the general public
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, staff, and the general public; learn and implement policies for students in the program employee is responsible for
Essential Education, Skills, and Capabilities
  • Keep current on changes in job requirements by attending training, classes, or workshops
  • Assist licensed teachers with routine classroom activities
  • Assist licensed teachers in preparing assignments (e.g., correcting papers, copying, decorating, supply preparation)
  • Assist in building tasks such as selling lunch tickets, counting lunch fund receipts, and recording/balancing lunch counts
  • Supervise students in classrooms, lunchrooms, media centers, playground, bus pickup/drop‑off
  • Resolve routine behavior problems within prescribed school policy guidelines and refer severe problems to teacher or administrator
  • Administer first aid
  • Hold a high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Have at least one year of child‑care experience (preferred)
  • Hold Oregon driver’s license or have reliable transportation
  • Obtain Medic First Aid Card within first 60 days of employment
  • Possess additional certifications/training as required to perform duties (e.g., blood sugar testing, bee sting, medication dispensing)
  • Solve practical problems with limited standardization
  • Interpret instructions given in various formats (written, oral, diagrams, schedules)
  • Communicate effectively in English; non‑native speakers must be able to seek clarification
Physical and Environmental Requirements
  • Show constant observation of students; see near and far; discriminate colors
  • Hear sufficiently to understand speech and distress signals
  • Occasional medium lifting (20–50 lbs) and frequent light lifting (0–20 lbs)
  • Occasional carrying of supplies and equipment
  • Occasional pulling/pushing of chairs, vacuums, doors, etc.
  • Occasional implementation or assistance with individual student restraint protocols
  • Occasional crawling, kneeling, climbing, and repeated bending during tasks such as toileting and bus loading
  • Maintain balance and coordination for student assistance tasks
  • Occasional use of household cleaning chemicals (bleach), glues, blood exposure, insects, and weather conditions; noise level moderate to high
Terms of Employment

This is a 9‑month assignment on the range of the Classified Job Schedule. Actual days may vary depending on the number of school days or the size and needs of the classroom population.
