General Duties

Summary:

Performs a variety of duties assisting a licensed teacher in implementing instructional programs for students with special needs. May work in an instructional setting separate from the teacher, exercising a considerable degree of skill with supervision within the framework of a teacher‑planned and evaluated program.

• Work with a variety of students and demonstrate a willingness to gain the information and training necessary to work effectively.
• Possess characteristics and understanding to be an effective member of an educational support team.
• Comprehend and follow oral and written instructions and complete work within established timelines.
• Communicate with an appropriate student age group requiring the exercise of both empathetic and disciplinarian approaches.
• Maintain a confidential, non‑preferential, non‑judgmental manner toward students, staff, and the program.
• Develop and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, staff, and the general public.
• Ensure spelling, punctuation, capitalization, word usage, and sentence construction are correct to detect and correct basic errors in prepared materials.
• Demonstrate mental acuity, processing skills, and long and short‑term memory to track and meet deadlines and responsibilities.
• Be consistently on time, every work day.
• Preferred:
  Discrete Trial Training and Applied Behavioral Analysis experience.
• Spanish preferred.
• Must have an AA degree or equivalent.

• Learn and implement policies for students the employee is responsible for.
• Keep current on changes in job requirements by attending training, classes, or workshops.
• Assist in administering criterion‑referenced tests for daily tracking or programming.
• Implement education programs as designed by the Learning Specialist (e.g., language, motor, academic, and physical education programs).
• Assist in implementing behavioral and disciplinary programs as designed and mentored by Learning Specialist.
• Assist with or monitor students’ completion of classroom assignments in regular or special‑education settings.
• Assist students in performing routines related to self‑help, including feeding, toileting, and mobility.
• Correct objective tests and assignments.
• Contact parents to communicate objective information as assigned by Learning Specialist.
• Maintain confidential files as assigned by Learning Specialist.
• Escort and monitor students in and out of classrooms, playgrounds, cafeterias, buses, restrooms, and field trips.
• Use basic computer software.
• Collect data regarding students' goals for their IEPs.
• Solve practical problems and handle a variety of variables in situations with limited standardization.
• Interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
• Possess a combination of education and experience equal to 12–14 years, if individual assignments vary.
• One year minimum child‑care experience preferred.
• One year experience as an Instructional Assistant or in a setting with high‑needs students desirable.
• Oregon Driver’s License, or ability to commute to work in a timely manner.
• Medic First Aid Card (must be certified within the first 60 days of employment).
• Other certifications/training as required (e.g., blood sugar testing, bee sting, medication dispensing).
