GRI is seeking a Field Specialist to join our growing team. As a Field Specialist, you will gain experience working on a variety of interesting assignments under the mentorship of project/senior geologists and engineers.

General responsibilities include:- Conduct Pavement Condition Index (PCI) surveys including field distress identification, data collection, and quality control to support pavement management and rehabilitation planning
- Perform Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) testing to evaluate pavement structural response
- Maintain and operate FWD equipment, including routine sensor verification and troubleshooting
- Operate and maintain truck and cart mounted Ground Penetrating Radar equipment (GPR)
- Observe fill placement
- Observe placement and construction of cement treated fills and subgrades
- Observe subgrade for foundations, slab on grade, and roadways
- Observe trench excavations and backfill
- Observe placement of pavement and slab on grade base course
- Observe proof-rolls of fills, subgrade, and base course
- Observe construction of mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining walls
- Perform density testing of engineered fills, compacted base course, retaining wall backfill, and asphalt concrete pavements
- Collect samples of onsite soils and aggregate for construction related laboratory testing
- Perform laboratory testing including moisture contents, sieve analysis, #200 wash, and proctors
- Observe installation of drainage sections around retaining walls, and foundations
- Observe and document installation of deep foundations such as driven piles, drilled shafts, micropiles, auger-cast piles, drilled displacement piers, soldier piles, pin piles, and helical piles
- Observe installation of ground improvement including aggregate piers, compaction grouting, deep soil mixing, cutter soil mixing, jet grout, permeation ground, dynamic compaction, and rigid inclusions
- Observe installation of anchors including soil nails, tie backs, rock bolts, and rock doweling
- Manage and coordinate work with construction contractors
- Collect soil, rock, and groundwater samples & data; evaluate & interpret data collected
- Prepare concise and timely site visit reports
- Communicate on project sites with contractors/subcontractors
- Identify and understand unsuitable conditions in the field, apply knowledge to real-world situations on project sites to make recommendations
- Understand proper piles, anchor testing, fill placement, drilled shafts, and apply knowledge to real-world conditions on project sites to identify inappropriate or unsuitable conditions/ application, & make recommendations in real-time
- Attend internal and external project meetings
- Strong understanding of geotechnical construction and design considerations including the terms and methodology used in geotechnical engineering
- Perform simple calculations and use tools to compute data
- Interpret and communicate site plans and specifications
- Communicate clearly with project managers; ability to manage time and meet deadlines
- Work with a variety of other personnel in the office and in the field
- Use computers, tablets, and mobile devices
- Perform physical tasks on project sites that may include walking, climbing,
- crawling, or standing for long periods of time
- Perform work outdoors in all types of weather, including inclement conditions
- Lift up to 70 pounds at times
- Travel to project sites in vehicles
- Work may include out-of-town travel for extended periods of time
- Associate Degree in Civil Engineering or Geology with 3+ years (5+ preferred) of relevant experience
- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or Geology with 0+ years (2+ preferred) of relevant experience
- EIT/GIT Preferred
- Valid driver's license
