JOB TITLE: ASC Surgical Technologist

SUPERVISOR: Director of Surgery Centers

HOURS PER WEEK: 40hrs/Non-Exempt

DEPARTMENT: Day Surgery

HIRING BONUS: $1,000 after 90 days

PRIMARY FUNCTION

Assists the surgeon by providing and controlling the sterile instruments, supplies and equipment required during surgical intervention. Assure instruments and supplies are cleaned, sterilized and available when needed.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Open sterile supplies and prepare for each operative procedure. Whenever possible, remove instrument containers before the Patient enters the room.
  • Compile and make available all necessary supplies needed for procedures.
  • Prepare surgical trays, instruments, equipment, and supplies as directed before and during procedures.
  • Assist the surgeons during procedure according to prescribed standards. Assist and anticipate the needs of the surgeon.
  • Set up table, instruments and supplies according to the type of procedure. Double-check instrument sterility and verify with circulator.
  • Establish “safe zone” to avoid sharps injuries and communicate to team. Actively participate in timeouts.
  • Maintain correct count of sponges and needles as directed.
  • Maintain aseptic technique at all times as dictated by accepted standards.
  • Assist in maintenance and care of specimens as directed.
  • Assist in application of dressings, casts, and in moving patients as directed.
  • Help to clean and maintain rooms, equipment, and furniture according to prescribed procedures.
  • Assist with emergency procedures as directed.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span, and is able to identify and categorize each patient’s age-specific grouping of needs.
  • Work in or assist with Sterile Processing department as needed.
  • Adherent to current standards of practice/infection control as developed by agency standards.
  • Responsible for the proper cleaning and sterilization of individual instruments/sets per manufacturer recommendations.
  • Maintain and update instrument sets and reusable sterile supply lists.
  • Ensure all loaner instruments/sets are properly identified and cared for and are returned to the proper institution/vendor in clean and/or sterile condition.
  • Perform semi-annual physical inventories on instrumentation.
  • Immediately remove any damaged instrumentation from service, and communicate such with appropriate individuals.
  • Maintain all autoclaves, washer‑decontaminators, Sterrad and Steris load documentation.
  • Participates in cleaning and upkeep of washers and autoclaves.
  • Monitor and document all biological testing for autoclaves and Sterrad machine.
  • Immediately report any discrepancies or positive results in required testing to the appropriate individual.
  • Assist in maintaining prescribed levels of sterile and non-sterile supplies for the operating room, as assigned.
  • Participate in preparation of the next day case cart supplies in a timely manner.
  • Participate in timely delivery of instruments/supplies for in-progress cases as needed.
  • May assist in the transport of instruments from the operating room to dirty utility room in a timely manner to assure all instruments are cleaned and sterilized before the day they are needed.
  • May assist in the turnover of operating rooms, as needed.
  • Maintain current knowledge of all policies and procedures.
  • Uses appropriate PPE at all times.
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Uses appropriate use of PPE for patient care and other settings where required.
  • Be an active participant in committees (i.e. Safety Committee, Infection Control).
