Responsibilities
- Provide expressive and receptive interpretation and transliteration for deaf and hard of hearing students in classroom and school settings.
- Interpret spoken content into American Sign Language, signed English systems, or oral communication as appropriate.
- Support assigned students during instructional activities to promote access, engagement, and understanding.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers to identify student needs and recommend environmental or instructional supports.
- Tutor individual students or small groups to reinforce instructional concepts under teacher supervision.
- Interpret during assemblies, presentations, videos, discussions, and school activities.
- Assist with instructional materials and specialized equipment such as captioning tools, TTY, and educational software.
- Maintain accurate records related to interpreting services and student support activities.
- Serve as a resource to staff and families regarding deafness and communication access.
- Participate in required trainings, staff development, and meetings.
- Uphold confidentiality, ethical standards, and mandated reporting responsibilities.
- Valid Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certificate of proficiency.
- Full or Interim Educational Interpreter System (EIS) approval.
- Demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language and educational interpreting practices.
- Knowledge of the Code of Ethics for Interpreters and Translators.
- Ability to convey abstract concepts and technical terminology accurately.
- Strong oral and written communication skills in English.
- Ability to work effectively with students, educators, families, and staff.
- Pediatric or school-based interpreting experience (bonus).
- Familiarity with deaf culture, language development, and educational accommodations (bonus).
- Experience supporting students in inclusive classroom environments (bonus).
- Strong organizational and record-keeping skills (bonus).
