Base pay range

$24.85/hr - $37.30/hr

Major Responsibilities
  • Provides direct patient care under the direction of the Physical Therapy Department Physical Therapists and assists in the supervision of support staff.
  • The physical therapist assistant will provide patient treatment according to the plan of care and goals set by the physical therapist.
  • Compares baseline data measured by the physical therapist.
  • Communicates with the physical therapist regarding patient response to treatment.
  • Includes functional assessments in progress notes and functional training in the treatment program.
  • Reflects on status of goals established by the physical therapist.
  • If goals have been achieved will notify the physical therapist.
  • Instructs patients in home programs and the use of home equipment, modifying and progressing as appropriate based on the plan of care established by the physical therapist.
  • Upgrades or downgrades the exercise program based on the patient tolerance and plan of care.
  • Initiates appropriate discussion of care with primary physical therapist, based on patient’s progress and treatment response as to readiness for or need for plan of care changes.
  • Directly supervises Physical Therapy Extenders in administering treatment to patients.
  • Responsible for timely, thorough and complete patient documentation.
  • All documentation will be clearly signed, dated and co-signed by the physical therapist.
  • Documentation of treatments performed will be clear, concise, and accurate with minimal spelling or grammatical errors.
  • Documentation will be well‑organized in the electronic medical record.
  • All communications regarding patient care, contacts with physician offices, rehab nurses, family, etc. are documented.
  • Encounter forms will be complete, accurate and submitted same day.
  • Documents upgrades to treatment programs or when treatment is appropriately deferred along with reasons why deferred.
  • Documents home instructions or exercises issued to patients or when reviewed instructions.
  • Charges for patient treatment are done accurately and within 24 hours of the patient visit.
  • Complies with and meets documentation standards for the department and as needed for reimbursement.
  • Participates in ongoing education activities and is pro‑active in skills/knowledge development.
  • Keeps abreast of current practices via literature, networking with internal/external customers.
  • Participates in departmental initiatives to achieve Clinic and department goals.
  • Participates in departmental educational initiatives and applies skills and knowledge to support basic patient evaluation and/or treatment skills.
  • Meets all continuing education requirements needed to maintain licensure.
  • Responsible for maintaining productive daily operations and compliance with standards of care and reimbursement procedures.
  • Responsible for maintaining the following productivity metrics: 4.6 weighted procedures per hour, Cancellation/No Show rate less than or equal to 10%, 3.4 weighted procedures per visit, 12‑14 patients seen in an 8 hour day, monitors openings and/or cancellations in their daily schedule and takes action to effectively fill the openings with patients.
  • Utilizes ancillary staff efficiently and ethically based on practice act and payer provider rules.
Education & Experience
  • Associate’s degree for Physical Therapist Assistants from an accredited program.
Licensure & Certifications
  • Illinois Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant.
  • BLS CPR certification.
Physical Requirements And Working Conditions
  • Ability to travel between sites and may work evenings.
  • Physical ability to lift, transfer, position, and exercise patients.
  • May have excessive noise, poor temperature control.
  • Ability to make sound judgments to downgrade or upgrade treatment programs based on patient status.
  • Use of EMR requires repetitive use of keyboard and mouse.
  • Possible exposure to chemicals or blood‑borne pathogens.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case‑by‑case basis.
