Purpose and Scope
Lead mechanical design engineer duties covering design, development, analysis, and review of HVAC systems including clean rooms, VAV, constant volume, distribution systems, air handlers, fan systems, central plant systems, chilled water, packaged units, fume hoods, dust collection, fire suppression, and pressure vessel systems. Under the supervision of the Mechanical Design Engineering Supervisor.
Responsibilities- Interface and liaise with internal and external customers at all levels from quotation to final design, including all design reviews and technical working group meetings.
- Develop and maintain technical and specification documentation that complies with contract and government standards.
- Prepare, review, and submit technical papers and engineering studies.
- Conduct site visits, field inspections, and investigations to analyze engineering problems and propose alternative solutions.
- Coordinate effectively with engineering disciplines, NASA customers, NASA contractors, field technicians, project managers, CAD drafters, and program management.
- Adhere to project budgets, schedules, scope, and priorities, communicating project status to management, design team, and stakeholders.
- Provide technical support for Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) estimates and risk assessments.
- Contribute to the development, maintenance, testing, and troubleshooting of HVAC control systems (BAS, SCADA).
- Reference and utilize ASHRAE, ASME, NFPA, NASA, and KSC codes, standards, and guidelines.
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
- Florida PE license (HVAC, FP) or obtain within six months of start date.
- Fifteen (15) years of relevant experience.
- Three (3) years of Pressure Vessel System experience highly desired.
- Three (3) years of Fire Protection experience highly desired.
- Familiarity with industrial HVAC, Pressure Vessel Systems, Fire Suppression, and Plumbing.
- Proficiency with Specs Intact, Micro Station, Acrobat, AutoCAD, HASS, AFT Arrow, AFT Fathom, and AFT Impulse.
- Ability to investigate, troubleshoot, and design cost‑effective solutions in a timely manner.
- Desire to expand knowledge of other controls and automation systems.
- Excellent communication and analytical skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain and maintain required clearances/badges.
- Must communicate effectively in English, both verbal and written.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Office environment with occasional lifting up to 20 pounds, constant computer use, and regular site walk‑downs for design projects and troubleshooting.
