Cryogenic Fluids Design Engineer

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance. This includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities.

As a Cryogenic Fluids Design Engineer, you will directly contribute to building a road to space by developing the ground systems for New Glenn, our orbital launch vehicle designed for heavy-lift missions. This role is essential to the development and operation of the launch sites that will support this highly capable, next-generation vehicle.

You will own the lifecycle of cryogenic fluid systems—from initial concept and analysis through to fabrication, commissioning, and operational support. This position requires deep technical expertise in fluid system design, a commitment to safety, and a passion for advancing the future of space exploration. We are looking for someone to apply their skills and dedication to have a lasting impact on human spaceflight.

Responsibilities:
  • Design, analyze, and test cryogenic fluid systems to include storage, conveyance, and control.
  • Develop and validate models of fluid systems using relevant software tools.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate cryogenic fluid systems into aerospace vehicles.
  • Prepare technical documentation and present findings to stakeholders.
  • Ensure designs comply with safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide technical input for continuous improvement.
Qualifications:
  • Four-year aerospace or mechanical engineering degree (or similar discipline)
  • 5+ years of experience in a similar role
  • Experience with Solid modelling or plant modelling, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and configuration control of engineering and documentation.
  • Experience understanding fabrication and installation drawings
  • Knowledge of standard components, installation, and fabrication methods of piping systems (pipe stock, fittings, connections, valves, fasteners, structural members, fittings, welding, etc.)
  • Proficient with fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer principles.
  • Proven expertise in utilizing AFT Fathom and Arrow or similar tools for advanced analysis and design of Fluid systems.
  • Proficient in Thermal Desktop for complex thermofluid analysis. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to provide innovative solutions to complex technical challenges.
Desired:
  • Hands-on experience operating and troubleshooting mechanical and/or piping systems.
  • Experience with creating process hazards analyses, job hazards analysis and formal risk evaluation.
  • Knowledge of ASME B31.3
  • Experience with design and operation of typical aerospace cryogenic fuels and oxidizers
  • Experience with design, operations, and maintenance of cryogenic systems
  • Knowledge of precision cleaning processes / levels and passivation of stainless steel
  • Knowledge of marine environment corrosion mitigation (material and coatings selection)
  • Familiarity with test equipment, such as multimeters, dew point meters, vacuum equipment, regulator panels.

Don't meet all desired requirements? Studies have shown that some people are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single desired qualification. At Blue Origin, we are dedicated to building an authentic workplace, so if you're excited about this role but your past experience doesn't align perfectly with every desired qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway.

You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
