Works with other Utility Maintenance Mechanic Apprentice(s) or other employees in carrying out such assignments. In addition to the following duties.
- Coordinates work with other Utility Maintenance Mechanic Apprentice(s) or other personnel assigned to assist.
- Assists in the installation, modification, and repair of mechanical/electrical equipment and structures.
- Assists in general maintenance and repair of assigned equipment and machinery including, but not limited to, lubricating pumps and motors; replacing parts; fabricating parts; painting, cleaning tools and equipment; threading, cutting and fitting pipe. Installs new parts and equipment as needed.
- Inspects for needed repairs.
- Conducts checks of electrical systems to determine repair needs as assigned.
- Performs gas and/or arc welding as required using equipment to heat, cut, braze, and weld.
- Prepares supply requisitions.
- Coordinates work with Utilities Maintenance Mechanic Apprentice(s) or other personnel of lower classifications assigned to assist.
- Follows scheduled maintenance programs, keeps routine maintenance records.
- Performs related work as required.
- Knowledge of tools, methods, materials and equipment used in general electrical and/or mechanical system repair.
- Knowledge of hazards and applicable safety precautions. Knowledge of welding techniques, depending on assignment.
- Ability to follow oral/written instructions.
- Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and sketches.
- Ability to make inspections to determine operating conditions and repair needs.
Utility Maintenance Mechanic Apprentice:
High school graduate or equivalent diploma is required plus one year’s experience in the repair and maintenance of electrical and/or mechanical systems in buildings, machinery, or equipment is preferred however, not required. A combination of education and experience may be considered.
Utility Maintenance Mechanic III:
High school graduate or equivalent diploma is required plus one year’s experience in the repair and maintenance of electrical and/or mechanical systems in buildings, machinery, or equipment. Confined space entry and lock out tag out certifications.
Utility Maintenance Mechanic II:
High school graduate or equivalent diploma is required plus two years’ experience in the repair and maintenance of electrical and/or mechanical systems in buildings, machinery, or equipment. Confined space entry and lock out tag out certifications. Florida Water and Pollution Control Operators Association (FWPCOA) Utilities Maintenance Mechanic II certification.
Possession of a valid Florida Non-Commercial or commercial driver's license, depending on assignment. Must be able to drive a City vehicle to various places to get materials and/or deliver constructed items on a daily basis.
Ability to operate special equipment such as dump truck, boom truck, air compressor, frequently.
Working knowledge of welding techniques depending on assignment. Incumbents are subject to emergency call‑out during off‑duty hours and on weekends as required.
Work towards obtaining the Florida Water and Pollution Control Operators Association (FWPCOA) Utility Maintenance Mechanic III certification.
This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current Drugs and Alcohol policy.
During occasions of local emergencies this position may be require to report to perform emergency tasks, which may result in extended work hours as well as extended work periods of time away from family members. The Incident Commander and the employee's department head will make the determination as to who will be required to work.
