Utility Maintenance Mechanic Apprentice $17.21- $28.41 Utility Maintenance Mechanic III $18.24 - $30.09 Utility Maintenance Mechanic II $19.33 - $31.90

This is maintenance and repair work of electrical and/or mechanical systems on equipment, structure, and vehicles. Incumbent may assist Senior Maintenance Mechanics or Electricians in carrying out specific duty assignments. Incumbent may also work under indirect supervision using independent judgement in carrying out routine duty assignments.

Responsibilities
  • Assists in the installation, modification, and repair of mechanical/electrical equipment and structures.
  • Assists in general maintenance and repair of assigned equipment and machinery including, but not limited to, lubricating pumps and motors; replacing parts; fabricating parts; painting, cleaning tools and equipment; threading, cutting and fitting pipe. Installs new parts and equipment as needed.
  • Inspects for needed repairs.
  • Conducts checks of electrical systems to determine repair needs as assigned.
  • Performs gas and/or arc welding as required using equipment to heat, cut, braze, and weld depending on assignment.
  • Coordinates work with Utilities Maintenance Mechanic Apprentice(s) or other personnel.
  • Follows scheduled maintenance programs, keeps routine maintenance records.
  • Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
  • Knowledge of tools, methods, materials and equipment used in general electrical and/or mechanical system repair.
  • Knowledge of hazards and applicable safety precautions. Knowledge of welding techniques, depending on assignment.
  • Ability to follow oral/written instructions.
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and sketches.
  • Ability to make inspections to determine operating conditions and repair needs.
  • Ability to operate special equipment including but not limited to, dump truck, boom truck, and air compressor, depending on assignment.
Education & Experience
  • Utility Maintenance Mechanic Apprentice:
    High school graduate or equivalent diploma is required plus one year's experience in the repair and maintenance of electrical and/or mechanical systems in buildings, machinery, or equipment is preferred however, not required. A combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Utility Maintenance Mechanic III:
    High school graduate or equivalent diploma is required plus one year's experience in the repair and maintenance of electrical and/or mechanical systems in buildings, machinery, or equipment. Confined space entry and lock out tag out certifications.
  • Utility Maintenance Mechanic II:
    High school graduate or equivalent diploma is required plus two years' experience in the repair and maintenance of electrical and/or mechanical systems in buildings, machinery, or equipment. Confined space entry and lock out tag out certifications. Florida Water and Pollution Control Operators Association (FWPCOA) Utilities Maintenance Mechanic II certification.
  • Possession of a valid Florida Non-Commercial or commercial driver's license with acceptable driving record, depending on assignment. Must be able to drive a City vehicle to various places to get materials and/or deliver constructed items on a daily basis.

Incumbents are subject to emergency call-out during off-duty hours and on weekends as required.

Physical Requirements
  • Speaking:
    Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken English word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely. Ability to communicate verbally both in person and over the phone.
  • Standing:
    Particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Stooping:
    Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Talking:
    Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Visual Acuity:
    Have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles, include close vision, distant vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Walking:
    Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another. Including ability to walk on uneven terrain and work in unimproved areas under construction during utility installations and maintenance tasks, including ability to enter confined spaces such as well pits, tanks, and valve pits, frequently.
  • Climbing:
    Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Must be able to climb 20-foot ladder to reach various roofs to perform repairs as needed. Must be able to climb 100-foot access ladder to reach overhead storage tanks, depending on assignment. Body agility is emphasized. Enter confined spaces for internal repairs.
