Position: Applicant Pool for Adjunct Faculty, Speech

Job Overview

Teaching faculty at Owens Community College are responsible for supporting student success by creating an optimum learning environment, responding to student needs, managing effective instructional activities, modeling employability skills, demonstrating professionalism, developing cooperative work relationships with other faculty and staff, supporting college administrative requirements, and maintaining competency in their instructional field. The applicant will be responsible for quality instruction and for active participation and interest in the total affairs of the college.

This position requires teaching undergraduates, and applicants must provide evidence of teaching potential. The applicant must be aware of current pedagogy in the teaching of college students and specifically in the discipline of Speech Communication.

Essential Functions

Develops a syllabus for the class using the assigned syllabus shell, including designing an evaluation procedure that falls within the parameters of the syllabus shell and creating a calendar of assignments in accordance with the course outline.

Prepares lesson plans and conducts classes during the scheduled times using the Department-approved text(s).

Follows Department guidelines for course content and best practices.

Meets classes on all scheduled dates during the assigned semester.

Meets classes on time and holds classes for their fully allotted time.

If teaching online, respects the Owens Community College Standards for Web Instruction.

Uses appropriate classroom management techniques.

Uses appropriate means and methods of technology.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Strong written and oral communication.

Problem‑solving.

Critical thinking.

Computer use, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and/or other required programs, Blackboard, and Owens email.

Integrates a variety of methodologies to facilitate student learning.

Understands the needs of community college students.

Manages a classroom, organizing and presenting material, designing lessons and activities that facilitate student learning, and monitoring student behavior and performance.

Follows instructions and meets deadlines.

Recognizes students’ strengths and weaknesses and provides feedback to facilitate their learning.

Evaluates student work fairly using Department guidelines.

Minimum Education & Experience
